First battle rifle

I’m in the market for my first battle rifle but need help picking one out. I like the AR-15 but really want something similar in size to an M4. I have no experience with these rifles, not sure what an upper or lower is but my brother in law suggested I get the barrel chromed. I believe he said this would prevent jamming.
I’m looking for something in the $1,000 range give or take a few hundred. Quality is my major concern, a lower price won’t hurt my feelings. Maybe I should wait till mid September when the band ends, who knows. Any of you who live in the central Ohio area, can you recommend a place where I could order one and not get ripped off. Gander MT. has the best prices but they don’t sell military style rifles. Most of the stores in the Columbus area are a little high. Any advice would be appreciated.

Rock River Arms or Bushmaster 16.5" carbine, with either an M4 profile barrel or a heavy barrel, with an A1 stock, in the flat top (A3) configuration will give you an M4-size carbine, the flat top reciever lets you attach optics if you feel like it. The A1 (M16A1) length stock fits more people better especially with body armo or a jacket on, and gives you a better cheekweld than the collapsing-stocks-that-don't-collapse.
One of these should run you about $850-900. As to quality, Bushmaster supplies rifles everywhere in the world and Rock River Arms just got a contract to supply 5,000 nearly identical carbines to what I described to the FBI and DEA.

There are a LOT of AR-15s that will fit your needs. Try this primer - it's quite out of date, but it gives you an idea of how to go about it:

Also look at this article about the "ideal rifle":

You can build an AR yourself fairly easily from a kit and a stripped lower receiver, or you can just buy a completed rifle (the lazy way ;) ).
This is my Bushmaster Superlight Carbine. I'm very, VERY happy with how it shoots and how it handles. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. I paid $770 for it out-the-door, including shipping/transfer.

because i'm a gun nerd... "battle rifles" generally refer to rifles chambered for full power cartridges, 8x57, 30-06, .303, .308. The terms "assault rifle" or "battle carbine" generally refer to rifles chambered for intermediate cartridges, 223, 7.62x39, 7.92 kurz.

a real battle rifle would be a enfield No.4 Mk1 in .303 for about $200-300...really reach out and touch someone. for something in a "modern calibre", how about the new enfield that feeds from m-14 mags

A true "Battle Rifle" would be something like one of the venerable WWII-era rifles such as an M1 Garand, Springfield M1903 or 1903A3, the various Mausers, Enfields, Japanese rifles or even a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 or M38 or M44. The M14 would be another choice for a "Battle Rifle" in the traditional sense. These would be high-power calibers capable of reaching out to 600yds and beyond with a high level of accuracy.
Some of these rilfes are pretty cheap to acquire, like the Mosins, or upwards of $400 for others like the Garand or 1903 Springfields.

If you wanna AR15, y'oughta wait until after the ban sunsets, 09/13/04. Rifles probably won't be much cheaper, but they'll have the flash hider and bayo lug (for what THAT's worth), and milsurp mags will probably be muuuuuuuch cheaper.
