I'm visiting family in Orlando, FL, and I'm hoping someone can point me to a good public indoor shooting range around here. One that you can rent guns from too, as I had to leave my firearms behind :(

I bought a gun from these guys Rieg's (http://www.orlandogunshop.com/main.htm) . They were nice to deal with. They have an indoor range in their shop, but I didn't use it, so I can't comment on it.

Visited Oak Ridge Gun Range this past Saturday. Their rental prices are good if you stay there for more than 2 hrs. They have a scant pistol selection, but they have machine guns for rent too!
The range itself was small (4 lanes), crowded, well-ventilated but not air-conditioned. And watch out for their custom reloads, they are dirty as heck.

I visited Rieg's and found the billing was unusual. I rented a Ruger Security Six and bought some S&B ammo for it. I rented ear muffs for the indoor range. They were in poor condition so I returned to the counter to get better muffs. I was told that all the muffs were in the same condition. I bought some ear plugs to augment the muffs since the muffs wouldn't seal. A 357 mag on an indoor range require good hearing protection. All was well until I paid my bill, the ear plugs were $7.00! I demanded a receipt so I could write to the owner. They gave me a receipt for the correct amount but showed the extra $7.00 as a second gun rental @ $7.00 per hour. They said they couldn't give me a receipt for the ear plugs because there was no inventory number for the plugs. They gave me a receipt for two gun rentals instead of the ear plug receipt. I felt ripped off.
I had to leave and get to a dinner or I would have waited to straighten it out. The gun and ammo etc. were just fine.

I'm also interested in finding an indoor range in the Orlando area as I'll be moving to my retirement home in Orange City in December, and we're having a family get together there on the weekend of August 21st. The Outdoor World in Dania has an indoor range, what about the store in Orlando? I won't need to rent anything. Any recommendations on shooting clubs in the area. I'm interested in handgun, highpower and in particular skeet.

East Orange and Shoot Straight in Casselberry are my favorites for indorr.
East Orange has 2 typical range gods but they are easily ignorable the rest of the people are prettygood.
Shoot Straight in Casselberry has about the friendliest staff of any kind I have ever dealt with. I go in there sometimes just to hang out and I'm fairly anti social. Both places have a pretty good assortment of rentals and good equipment. They usually only charge me for an hour unless the place is crowded
There are 3 or 4 outdoor ranges in the area also
I only know of them not about them, but there is one in Geneva, one in Chuluota off Willingham rd, one off Weewahootee rd, and I'm not sure if TM ranch in Narcoosee is still operating ..
zaijian
What area of Orlando will you be staying. If you are in my area I may be able to save you some gun rental fees, (any excuse to get out and shoot)
spook
The range in Geneva is closest to your hous. The first Sunday of the month is open to the public to try out. Most of the people I know only go at that time to avoid club fees, the trade off is you have to share the range with people that don't take shooting very seriously

While you're in Orlando, don't forget to get by Randall Made Knives on Orange Blossom Trail. If you've any interest in hand made knives, that's like a Moslem pilgrim getting to visit Mecca. And Gary Randall can probably tell you about local ranges, or his employees can.

The Seminole County Gun & Archery range is near Geneva, which is probably the closest range to Orange City. It has a shotgun facility for mostly 5 stand but is developing a sporting clays and skeet field in the next few years. They do have a 300 yard rifle range and lots of different organized shooting events. They also allow full-auto weapons which is not that common in the area.
You can find out more at www.scgaa.org
I have been a member at SCGAA for 3-4 years, its a very nice club with lots of good people. When you get in the area if you want to visit SCGAA let me know.
The closest indoor range is probably Shoot Straight at Casselberry. I don't like the store but the range looks okay to me. There is also a gun range at Eustis, FL which isn't very far from Orange City. I know they have trap fields, I'm not sure about skeet since I haven't been there.

Of course, this thread picks up the day after I leave Orlando :)
I was staying near the 13000 section of OBT, between it and John Young. I was about 7 miles away from the oak ridge gun shop. Wish I had known about the knife store beforehand! But then again, all my luggage was carry-on, so the knife would have to have been shipped anyway.

You were actually within a half hours drive of any of the indoor ranges listed. Sounds like you were in the Williamsburg area
That can be a pretty rough area of the trail at night . Not far from there is the 800 block of Parramore get stranded there after midnight and it's a whole new adventure in urban survival.

HI Guys, just seen this thread.
Basically, i am in a similar position myself, me and two friends are flying out to orlando next week on holiday. One of my friends is a Police officer over here in the UK and will be in posession of his id/badge etc. I Used to be in the armed forces over here in the UK, and i used to do a lot of 5.56 target and range shooting part of national competitions etc, which i miss a great deal.
Im going through my shotgun license and firearm license here in the UK right now (takes time and lots of paperwork for us in the UK) so i can join a local club, but while we're in the US just had a thought that we may beable to have a go on a local range.
In orlando, can we just walk in off the street and rent weapons and all the gear and just have a go on a range?
We're staying at a marriot resort and are attending the daytona bike show for a couple of days, but will be in orlando doing the usual sightseeing/resort visits, and want to have a go on a range one of the days.. what do you guys reckon? "Shoot Straight in Casselberry" is still looking like one of the best? do we need to call ahead and make a booking, or just show up..
Thanks in advance..

Welcome to Orlando!
I've shot at most of the ranges I've seen mentioned here. My honest opinions...
1) I would not recommend Rieg's or Oak Ridge Gun Range. Both are in, shall we say, rougher parts of town. Exceedingly SLOOOOW customer "service" and plus I feared for my safety the last time I stepped into Oak Ridge (because of some gangsta looking clientele) and vowed never to return. Rieg's isn't quite as rough-looking. For what it's worth, I encountered more than a few Britons in Oak Ridge Gun Range back when I did go there to shoot - don't know why but the Brits liked the place. There you just walk in and sign in (leave your passport at the cash register to run a tab), and rent the guns you want. You can only take one at a time into the range, and you have to buy their ammunition to shoot. But you can shoot any pistol caliber there.
2) I do use East Orange Shooting Sports' indoor range occasionally (on days when rain or whatever precludes use of the outdoor club range I use). Safe and reasonably friendly, same deal about renting guns as in )1 above.
3) Shoot Straight is the nicest, newest and cleanest looking range I've seen. I've bought firearms from them but have never used their range. The range looks clean and well lit. Of the places listed here, I believe it is the most expensive on a per-hour basis. I believe the same rules apply for renting guns as for the other places in 1) and 2). Unfortunately, Apopka and Casselberry are probably also the farthest away from where you'll be staying.

Hmm.. thanks very much for your valued response and opinions. All duely noted.
Basically, we have a hire car and sat nav, so we're wlling to travel to the right place, here in the UK hand guns aren't allowed and access to them is very limited, and impossible unless your armed forces/police. So we want to have a little go with as many different types of weapons as possible.
have seen this:
http://www.topguntours.co.uk/shooting-orlando.html
but it looks a little touristy.. when you say expensive hourly rate wise, how much do you mean?
We would be interested in firing automatics/semi automatic hand guns and rifles, is this available at shoot straight?
Thanks again, excellent informative forum!

I would recommend shoot straight over the others for a tourist. They are in the nicer parts of town, the shops are clean, and they have lots to rent. But they do not rent fully automatic guns. There are some shops that do but they are in rougher parts.
That topgun thing looks like a joke. That's $125 USD that's crazy! But if you need a teacher for a beginner I guess it would be ok.
Here is how much it would cost you to go by yourself to shoot straight:
Monthly membership (you need this to rent guns) $35 (this also gives you 1 free gun rental)
Hourly range rate for anyone else joining you $8
Gun Rental $10
Cost of ammo and targets
Eye and ear protection is free
That equals $35 for just 1 person plus cost of ammo and targets. Then add $8 for each additional person. Plus $10 for each extra gun you want to shoot.
whitetiger7654
February 18, 2008, 11:00 AM
I forgot to mention if you do want to spend $125 per person to go out and shoot. Don't do that topgun thing, let me know. You can pay me the $125 plus the cost of ammo and I will bring any of my guns you want to shoot.

I think Shoot Straight is your best bet. Shoot straight Apopka has rifle lanes, but I would call and make sure that they have rifles for rent before driving up there. I *think* that Shoot Straight Casselberry has pistol caliber carbines but again I recommend calling ahead to verify this, if you decide to go there. In Shoot Straight Casselberry I recall seeing the usual lineup of Glocks and other autoloading pistols in 9mm, 40 cal, and 45ACP; they may also have some .38 Special and/or 357 magnum revolvers. They sell pistol cal carbines like the Hi Point and KelTec ones, but I don't know if they rent them.
East Orange Shooting Sports is alright too, not quite as new but fairly friendly, clean and well-supervised. I know they have Glocks and a couple other auto-loading pistols for rent, I think they have pistol cal carbines to rent. No "real" rifles can be shot there, though they do sell rifles. I use their gunsmith for whenever I need something fixed or investigated on my guns. It's not in a bad part of town but it's in or near a "light industrial" area so just be careful, don't want to alarm you just be careful there.

Just an fyi....I was helping someone on another travel board and had recommended Shoot Straight but later discovered that you have to be a member to rent their weapons. I did call to confirm this. I just didn't want you guys to waste a trip. A really nice store though so if you have the time, like others have said, stop by.
I just had family over last week (DH is from UK) and his sister and BF went to the gun range off of John Young Parkway and 39th street. This was recommended to them by a salesperson at Bass Pro Shop. They had no problems renting.

Hi Inflorida.
Thanks for this, basically, one of us has to take out one months membership for $35 and then the others can be guests for $8 a head. So all in between 3 of us: $51 so effectively: $17 each to enter.
One of the guys off here has suggested we meet up with him, and hence then we can go in on his membership and save some $$ and also fire his guns, so lets see how this route goes.
Anyone else free anytime, and wants to come down and have a little shoot, and show off their guns to us Brits.. be good to meet you..

I have a personal dislike for the owner of Shoot Straight, but the only complaint I have for his range is that the last time I went I left drenched in sweat
I could only shoot for less than an hour because the heat and sweat pouring into me eyes took all the fun out of it
If those conditions have been corrected it is a really nice range

joab - I haven't found an air conditioned indoor range anywhere in Orlando. Did you happen to go during summer? It can get really hot inside indoor ranges. But they don't care if you step out for a bit and cool off in the store then go back in.

I looked into that TopGun thing some more. They refuse to release the name of the range. But they did tell me the general area it is located in. The only range I know of in that area is Shoot Straight Casselberry location. Hope that helps, so now you know exactly what it would cost to go alone or if you want me to come with you.
Let me know if you need anything.

This may be late - but the East Orange range is prob the best in town. Shoot Straight has had issues with people getting robbed after shooting, the customer service is so-so. I bought my XD there but in hindsight will only buy at East Orange from now on-
I also think Apopka is way to far to drive- the cassleberry one only has like 6 stalls and it is handgun only.
If you are comming from out of town and are staying at the parks, East Orange is a good location, good part of town, great staff, good rentals, no time limit and real targets no paper plates!

Yeah but you have to jump through hoops of fire to get in to shoot. First you have to fill out application, appear in front of a jury (twice), learn the super secret hand shake, attend gun safety meetings, show proper gun handling on range, go threw probation period, pay money on top of all this, and finally go buy a car that drive down a road with millions of tiny speed bumps.
I swear I've driven on dirt roads that are smoother than their road.

I'd say the 441 Shoot Straight location is the best(and newest/2002) rental gun range in Orlando FL. To rent firearms is a major hassle . I use the shop to buy weapons but the staff are mostly useless. I have never been to the East Orange place but I've heard + things, :D. Reig's is ok. I can use the range for free but it is really a mess. The AC is &*$# and the air system does not ventilate the gunsmoke/airborne lead like it should. The Reig's staff is hit/miss.
If you want to rent full auto/class 3 type weapons like M-4/5.56mm or a HK MP-5 9mmNATO SMG try Universal Weapons Gallery by the 33rd ST jail. The range is small but they stock a lot of interesting firearms. ;)

In their (my?) defense, Central Florida Rifle/Pistol Club is not that bad. I saw the same stuff on their website a few years ago and was put off by it too, and ended up joining another club instead. Times changes, my old club just wasn't as good IMO as it had been, and I gave CFRPC another look. I'm now a member.
The membership process is slightly more involved than other clubs, but it really isn't bad. I've never heard of anyone NOT being voted in, and I can see that it's important that the rules be set up so that we could keep some yahoo or michael moore trojan horse from coming in, just in case someone did jump through the hoops who didn't belong there. And CFRPC is a GREAT place to shoot! Very safe but not so knee-jerk safety nazi about it so that you can't try some different things. Action ranges, 50-300 yards, and they even have one plinking range where you can bring out almost anything you want to blast (except glass or the once or twice a year someone tries to bring out a propane tank to shoot).
The road is pretty rough, but it's only the last 100 yards that's bumpy and I just slow down a lot for that little bit. :)

Luckily I have my own private range and don't have to deal with Shoot Straight or East Orange
East Orange CS is ridiculously abysmal their staff is about one step from worthless, I'm not sure which side of the line they fall on
I tried to ship a gun through them once they lost it and got snippy with me for calling every other day to see if they found it
They finally did, in a little room off of the sales floor that was readily accessible to the public
A friend put a slide in to be reblued and they cold blued one side of it
Another wanted sights put on a Norinco 1911 and the fat kid laughed at him and told him that they didn't do guns like that when he brought it in
This was after the friend had already spoken to the smith about it and had agreed to meet him there at a certain time on a certain date
Some may call that an appointment
But apparently their staff thinks of it as a hit or miss proposition

I've done the tourist month membership/rental thing at both Shoot Straight facilities. Good staff attitudes. Concur that lack of A/C in the indoor range itself can be challenging in warmer weather.
I try to wear one of my older IPSC match souvenier T-shirts when I visit as part of subtly establishing that visit is far from the first time I've seen the inside of a range.
