please provide an update on the affects of this type of practice on older s&w. do i really need snap caps?

ON an older SW centerfire revolver you do not need snap caps. Just make sure you are empty and point in a safe direction. Good to go.

having a good snap cap in a revolver is, IMHO, a hedge against wear. So, no matter what, I use them just in case. Good shooting;)

Dummy rounds are a lot less expensive than gunsmithing services.
