Gun store bandit shot dead

An unidentified man was fatally shot in the left chest yesterday in a failed attempt to rob the Outdoor Sportsman store in The Mall at Marathon.

The firms sells guns, gun accessories, knives, hunting, clothing and outdoor camping gear.

A crowd of curious onlookers, comprised of students, shoppers and mall employees, gathered just in front of the Super Video store waiting for the man's body to be wheeled out of the adjacent premises.

The crowd, that stood a short distance behind the crime scene tape, rushed forward for a closer view as the man's corpse, covered in a burgundy-coloured shawl, was taken from the store.

Describing the incident, Police Liaison Officer Superintendent Hulan Hanna said: "This afternoon at the Outdoor Sportsman, a male entered this establishment and he was asked by a sales person if he could help him. He replied that he could help himself. He took a bag off the shelf and proceeded to fill that bag with items including clothing, shoes, a night stick and a fishing knife."

He said after the man had collected the items, he attempted to leave the store, but was challenged by an on-duty security officer.

Supt. Hanna said the would-be robber then produced the knife he had stolen and chased the security officer around the store, with both men ending up behind the sales counter.

He said another male employee then confronted the intruder, resulting in the would-be robber falling to the floor after being shot in the left chest.

"Upon examining his body it was discovered that he was wearing two pairs of pants and dark-coloured shades," Supt. Hanna said.

"At this point," he noted, "we do not know who this person is; however we are following several leads as the matter is still under police investigation."

Police are describing the man's death as a homicide.

"Police are describing the man's death as a homicide."Pending review by an assistant DA who may or may not have political aspirations, no doubt.

I'm sorry...do I sound cynical?

Different jurisdictions have different terms for the same activity. That notwithstanding, I believe you can look up the term "Homicide" in most dictionaries and find it says something like, "A killing of one human being by another." In oher words, it is a neutral term, unlike "murder," "slaughter," "execution," or some other words with a built-in bias.

There is a distinction of homicide from "accident" or "death by misadventure," or even, "act of God."

If someone was attacking you or a member of your family, and you shot him to death, what would you call it? Probably something like, "justifiable homicide."

While prosecutors, police, and other [would-be] public figures do sometimes misstate the facts, in this case, I'll cut 'em some slack.

Last year, a local deputy killed a man and probably saved a lot of innocent bloodshed. The ruling: Justifiable homicide by a peace officer in the performance of duties.

Best,
Johnny
