I took my new S&W 625-10 to the range today to test some ammo out. I was interested in seeing how high performance ammo would do out of the 2" barrel. Due to the short barrel I decided to focus on smaller grain bullets with high muzzle velocities in order to get reasonible expansion of hollow points. All data was collected using a chronograph approximately 4' from the barrel. Here are the results.
Win 185gr FMJ
Avg Velocity 778.95 fps
STD DEV 17.11
Energy 249.31 ft-lbs
Fed 165gr Hydra-shok JHP PD45HS3H
Avg Velocity 886.39 fps
STD DEV 27.96
Energy 287.93 ft-lbs
Rem 185gr Golden Saber JHP +P
Avg Velocity 1019.58 fps
STD DEV 18.49
Energy 427.14 ft-lbs
Corbon 165GR JHP +P
Avg Velocity 1082.73 fps
STD DEV 30.31
Energy 429.62 ft-lbs
Misc notes:
The Winchesters had some problems. I had quite a few that didn't fire. They had an indentation from the firing pin but failed to fire. My guess is that they do not agree with the moon clips I was using (Wilson combat full moon clip). I used S&W 1/2 moon clips last time at the range and they worked fine. I know the Win isn't a hollow point, I just decided to include it since I had a few boxes with me.
The Federals produced little recoil, just a nice shooting round.
Remingtons had a nice little kick to them but were quite controllable.
The Corbons have some serious power. They also kicked the most. On one of the shots I fired one-handed the hogue rubber grip did its job. It gripped my hand all right and pulled some skin off the inside webbing of my hand.
I didn't really test accurancy much but just from initial observation I shot best with the Federals. This is probably due to its lower kick.
I will continue to test new rounds. Due to it's velocity and energy I feel that the Corbons are most likely to expand thus I will use them as my main defense round.
Please add any info you have on ammo from this gun or any 2" barrels.
