I felt like crap for most of the day today - very tired and my head was foggy. We went to dinner with my parents and while at the restaurant my dad (RON in PA) asked me if I wanted to go shooting with him. He goes to the indoor range at his club almost every Saturday night. I accepted his offer, figuring that it might do me some good.
I always feel better after a good range session and tonight was no exception. I brought along my Springfield Loaded M1911 and my S&W M1905, 4th Change Target Model.
The M1905 Military & Police is a K-Frame in .38 Special, the gun that evolved into the Model 10. Mine has a 6" pencil barrel, non-micrometer-click adjustable rear sight, and a McGivern bead front sight. It wears the original skinny, pre-Magna S&W grips made of checkered walnut. It was made in the 1920s but is in ~98% condition. I bought it a little over six years ago the night before my 30th birthday, chancing upon it in a gun shop.
I started off shooting the S&W with Winchester white box 150 grain LRN. These are standard pressure rounds and are gentle on the old gun.
Anyway, I was making nice little 1" 10-shot groups shooting SA slow fire, one handed, at 7 yards. I've never shot this good one handed. Despite the fog I was in all day, my head really cleared up once I got on the firing line.
After 40 rounds through the M1905, I put two dozen .38s through Dad's S&W Model 65. This is a stainless K-Frame in .357 with fixed sights, 3" barrel, round butt, and Uncle Mike's Boot Grips. It would make a great carry gun. I shot it double action, pretty quickly, keeping them all on a pie plate, although my groups opened up to about 4".
Next up was my Springfield Loaded. I wanted to try out two Chip McCormick 10 round magazines, and also run some more Wolf .45 ACP through it to see how it would do. The 10 round mags are primarily for my Marlin Camp 45 but I should know how they'll work in my 1911.
In short, the CMC mags work great in my Springer, as does the Wolf. So far, the gun, which I bought used earlier this year, has digested 150 rounds of Wolf, ~250 rounds of Ultramax 230 grain LRN commercial reloads, and several hundred rounds of Winchester USA 230 grain Ball. I have experienced zero ammo-related malfunctions with the gun. I've had a couple of failures to fully go into battery and one stovepipe, but other than these the gun's been super reliable and accurate. The Wolf shoots as good as the WWB or Ultramax ammo, and is dirt cheap.
Aside from his Model 65, Dad had his NRM Colt 1911-A1 and two different types of reloads. A light 200 grain LSWC load, and one with a little more oopmh but the same bullet. He was looking for a nice light load for target shooting since for him the .45 is a range gun. He had a couple of malfs, 1 stovepipe and 1 failure to go into battery, IIRC. The Colt runs 100% with Ball.
I'm headed off to bed now but boy do I feel good.
