A midday armed heist of a south Stockton convenience store Friday turned into a fierce shootout that left one of the robbers dead, the owner, a neighborhood icon, seriously wounded and a clerk shot in the hand.

Neighbors who heard the violent burst of gunfire saw two men, guns in hand, bolt from the Sonora Street store and called police at 12:30 p.m. Officers arriving at the scene found the lime-green front wall of the Better Buy Market smeared with blood.

Inside lay store owner Darrel Deal, 62, with bullet wounds to the head and abdomen. His employee, Hector Lozano, 20, was hit in left hand by a bullet.

Police found the body of a man lying in a pool of blood about a block away on Grant Street, a .38-caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol still clutched in his hand. The gunman had been shot twice in the chest and once in the neck. [cont'd]

Wonder if that Sig was a legal one or a stolen one .I havent seen to many 38 Super 220 around. It must have been a special order.:)

They haven't made .38 Super P220s since the 80s, and they never made a lot of them to begin with. So yeah, I kinda doubt that's what the guy had.

Who knows? The gun store I used to work at has a stack of 'em...at least 30. The point is, the reporter, while probably biased, wasn't necessarily wrong.

Also -- the most likely--
remember 9mm IS 38 caliber--

Nightcrawler

Actually, 9mm is .355-357 caliber. Hence .38 special and .357, as well as 9mm Luger and .380 Auto, can all use the same barrels.

There are no actual 0.38" bore diameter pistols in current mass production, to my knowledge. .38 Super, .380 Auto, .38 Special, are all roughly .355-.357" bore diameter.

Right --

.38 Super, .380 Auto, .38 Special, are all roughly .355-.357" bore diameter.

.355 to .358 BORE are nominally "38" caliber---
That's my point--

Again, Nightcrawler, that's the point.

Or perhaps you should dig up ol' Sam Colt to let him know that his .45 is actually .452.

I KNOW that's the point. But it's the other way around.

I must be missing your point. Are maintaining that the reporter is wrong?

Thumper, I can't help but notice your location, so I probably can't afford to ask this, but I have to anyway: Was that gun store nearby?

I still vote for the simplest solution to the original question. Reporter or cop read ".38" off the side of the pistol, so the leading candidates are probably a 220 or 230/232. Wouldn't rule out anything, including a Marlin .45-70, just relying on the technical expertise of either the average PD or reporter.

Stephen...

The gun store is Franklin's of Athens...in Athens, Georgia.

I visited recently and those Sigs are still there: P220-1s in .38 Super made in Eckernförde, Germany and imported by Hawes by the thousands. Good gun.

If anybody with a GADL wants one, call and ask for Frank.

*sigh* Monday.

In any case, I can't remember what my point was, so I'll just be quiet.
