*Better* Names for Pistol Sports?

Okay, I just gotta bug in my ear right now and wanna ask if we should ask certain "National/International Governing Bodies" to re-name themselves for greater accuracy. Sorta like avoiding deceptive trade names, dontchaknow?

So, IDPA seems to me more like the International Concealed Carry Pistol Shooters Association.

IPSC seems more like the International Speed Shooting Test Bed Confederation. They kept the rules so simple and unchanged, they allow quick-release holsters hanging way off the belt, which would dump the pistol if you ever sat in a car seat with 'em. :uhoh: Yeah, Practical all right. But they sure have helped us know what's humanly possible for speedy trigger manipulation!

Both of them, I believe, are a bit silly to *(almost?) never* allow duty rigs (IPSC wayback when I shot some in SLC did, but you were supposed to be either LE or a security guard by trade), but my readings of various after-action reports and even the Ayoob Files show that good guys often know trouble is brewing and are *not* in CCW mode when they either win or lose (why else do Medical Examiners know so much about high-vel rifle wounds imprinting the Mexican-Carry handgun in the decedent's belly skin?).

And both probably need a few more stages which start with the firearm in hand...But I digress...

NRA Bullseye Pistol needs no name change.

NRA Handgun Silhouette needs to hang it up, dump the multiple fragments of gun types, and just accept IMHSA and its competitions in toto. Who needs a third size of steel critter? Stick with full-size and rimfire...

UIT Pistol needs no change in name, but really should go back to .32 ACP minimum caliber for everything but slowfire precision (free pistol), including in Olympic Modern Pentathalon. .22 Shorts??? BAH!:barf: That ain't modern military courier stuff! If they stick with .22 shorts, the rapid-fire event with the beheaded politically correct targets should be re-named "Useless PopGun Rapid Fire". Well, maybe "International Lightweight Rapid Fire."

Cowboy shooting needs to either put in a reasonable separate minimum power factor for each caliber and continue to allow nothing less than .32-20 (wimpy!), or add "Wannabe" somewhere in its name. Otherwise, it's the SAS-LSS--Single Action Sissy-Load Shooters' Society. "Sass-Less" sounds wimpy enough, right?

NRA Action Pistol needs to either rotate one Bianchi Cup stage OUT every 5 years to be replaced by something completely different until they have only four of the classic "standards" each cycle, or they just need to be called "NRA Par Time Holster Matches". The rotation cycle would bring back a different classic every 5 years as another on the seniority list gets retired for a few cycles. New stages should be alternated between Par Time and Comstock scoring.

So, whaddya think? Replies should probably cover one discipline, to avoid longish stuff like this post... (Long)

Is there a point to this besides you disapprove of virtually all shooting sports?

Now, now, let's stay a bit lighthearted, okay? Many of us find great amusement on this board.

I actually like almost all of the shooting sports. All of them also have some specific things which I find annoying (except maybe IMHSA). In your perfect world, how would some sports be more accurately named?

BTW, my beef with SASS does *NOT* apply to those shotgun stages. Those boys and girls are GOOD with those hard-kickers.

I don't know of a rule that keeps you from using any holster in IPSC duty or otherwise as long as it covers the triggerguard.
besides you are misinterperting the names.
IDPA is international (that you can argue) Defensive Pistol Association.
Notice it is the pistol that is described as defensive not the person.
similarly IPSC is International Pratical Shooters Competition.
It is the shooter who is pratical not his equipment.:neener:

IPSC's C = Confederation. It's the worldwide body governing the national affiliates.

LOL: John Woo Would Even Think This Stage Is Silly
But grammatically, it's Even John Woo Would Think This Stage Is Silly = EJWWTTSIS. But yours makes a better acronym... maybe...Eee-juwitz sure doesn't flow...

Thanks for the input. Anyone have a silly acronym for Bullseye???

US 5.3.6.2:
Competitors shall not be permitted to commence a course of fire wearing...Uniformed police or military "duty rigs" or shoulder holsters (except as in 5.3.7 below)

US 5.3.7:
"Duty Rigs" are defined as holsters and allied equipment issued to active law enforcement officers or military personnel as standard equipment while on duty. Only active personnel in law enforcement and military service may use this equipment in competition and then only if the requirements of 5.3.6.4, 5.3.6.5 and 5.3.8 are satisfied.

And as for "quick-release holsters hanging way off the belt, which would dump the pistol if you ever sat in a car seat with 'em.", you've obviously never used or been around an IPSC race holster. Try it before you knock it :o
