Looking for accurate, high energy slug round. Cheap would also be good.

How about Wolf?

Noted small arms expert Peter Kokalis gave Wolf slugs and 00 buck his endorsement in a recent issue of SMALLARMS REVIEW. That carries a lot of weight.

I've tried out the 00 buck and it's great stuff.

I've always liked Brenneke, their KO slug works for me. Last I bought (case lot) were pretty cheep. I see Outdoor Superstore has them on sale:

At $1.75 a box, I'm gonna have to order another case.

Each shotgun is a law unto itself as to what slug will work best in it, meaning group the tightest. Since there's no ineffective slugs, accuracy is the main concern here.

Buy some 5 packs of the various Forster style slugs and the Brenekkes. Shun the 3" stuff, the 2 3/4" slug willl down any animal in North America just as well.
Also shun the sabots, they're for rifled barrels.

Bench test until one emerges as the tightest grouper, then buy all you can afford of that one, preferably all from the same lot.

The 1 oz KO "Brenekke" has been working well for me, but YMMV. The Winchester 1 oz HP slug is another slug with a good history here, and I've a couple hundred of these on hand.

HTH....

Mr. McCracken nailed it....every shotgun/barrel/ammo combo is an entire seperate law unto itself.

What is working well for MY shotty...18-1/2" smooth 'cylinder bore' barrel on the Maverick 88...The PMC brand of 2-3/4" rifled slug. YOUR shotty might like the PMC's a lot, or so-so, or way appear to throw them downrage sideways.

I did a chrono on Winchester 2 3/4 1 oz slugs and PMC 2 3/4 1 oz slugs and there was a very big difference in velocity.

Both brands of slugs are rated for 1600 fps however from my Mossberg 20 inch barrel I got around 1545 fps from the Winchester brand and only about 1355 fps from the PMC brand.

Update:

Ordered two cases of KOs from Outdoor Superstore on the 11th, UPS just delivered 'em (13th). Dang, those guys are quick (helps that they're just down the superslab in SC tho...).

First time I've dealt with them, good service all round.
