Help with Backup Gun
Island Beretta
February 18, 2003, 07:28 AM
Hi All:
I am in a bit of a quandary here. I need a backup gun to my Beretta compact L 9mm (this is more a mid-size gun).
So far the only criteria I have is polymer and very compact (about a 3'-3.5' inch barrel). The gun will occasionally be used for sole carry e.g. church. I am also concerned about the caliber and I am wondering if I should go up to .40 S&W. It will be very difficult to get a permit for a .45 ACP so I rule that out.
So far Glock 26/27/19/23 and Taurus Millenium are on the short-list but I have the feeling that I am yet to find the 'right' one. Ironically I have ruled out the 9000s because it is too fat..
Please help with your suggestions!! Thanks..

I would look at the Kahr P-Series. PM9, P9 Covert and P9. They also come in .40 but I have heard people say it is rather nasty to shoot. The Kahr's are much slimmer than the Glocks or Taurus but they are singel stack and don't hold as much ammo. 6-7 rds as compared to 10 rds. I think for the intended purpose, smaller size is more important than extra shots.

If you like the Beretta manual of arms, check out the Compact L Type M's. They are singlestack, 8+1 rounds of 9mm. You will need to buy new magazines though.
The Custom Carries are also compacts. Not sure if you can get them where you are, or if they are US models only.

Thanks for that, I overlooked the Kahr pistols. Shot one a while back and it was a nice shooter. I remember however the hard, long trigger pull that it had. I am going to their website right now for more info!!

OH, forgot to mention, go try a search over at TFL re: the Tauri poly guns ( Millenium ). Lot's of frame breakage & unhappy owners. I'd stay away until they prove themselves worthy.

I'd stay away until they prove themselves worthy. How long do you figure that's going to take?
Taurus fixed their frame cracking problems before September 2001 in new guns and they fix older ones free with shipping paid both ways by Taurus.
Just confirms the cliche that a good reputation can be lost in an instant, but it can never be restored.
I wish all the Taurus owners who hate their guns would sell them to me for what the owners claim they're worth as no-good POS.
