I've been shooting my G35 in IDPA and find it much more pleasant to shoot than my other Glocks. I was considering getting a 3.5 lb connector & spring kit for my G23 (which I may sometimes carry as well as use for competition).

Is there any real risk to a 3.5lb trigger for carry, or are the warnings I've seen "liability pre-emption" attempts?

Interested in points of view on this topic from competitors who also carry.

I'm a competitor, and a CCW teacher.

Personal gut opinion, it depends on how familiar you are with the trigger, and your personal level of skill, awareness, and adherance to keeping your finger out of the trigger guard until ready to fire.

My comp guns are my carry guns, and I'm running about a 4 pound trigger pull.

Now for some of the more basic students I've had come through my class on the other hand... I would say a 12 pound double action revolver pull is about right. :)

I hear ya...

...since I shoot IDPA, and it emphasizes "scenario shooting", the issues we deal with on the course should be similarly impacted by competition triggers and their safe use. Given that my finger is on the slide until I'm actively engaging a target, and target verification is ingrained in my skull...I couldn't see where 3.5lbs would be an issue. I'm not sure I'd want to go much less than that, but I've had no issues with it so far.

Spring weight, ammo brand, trigger weight has nothing to do with how clean a shoot is.

Either the bad guy was threatening your life or he wasnt.

...I know Mr. Ayoob teaches differently and given the "realities" we deal with, I understand why he does. Rationally, I concur with your statement...but our courts aren't always populated with rational people.

My question was more one of practicality from the shooter's perspective (e.g. any operational risks I should consider) as opposed to "legal entanglements" later.

As a NRA TC, Texas CHL intructor, LFI grad, SSA grad, and avid IPSC/IDPA/SASS (primarily IPSC) competitor, I tend to carry what I shoot.

My carry gun is the same configuration (although a shorter barrel, Commander vice 6") as my Limited gun, with the same 3-pound trigger.

My truck gun is my IDPA and IPSC/Production gun, with a Vanek 1.5lb trigger.

My take: these carefully tuned triggers are optimized for safety and accuracy, both necessary in the unfortunate and unlooked-for event that a precise shot would be necessary to safely stop an agressor.
