What's a Good Way to Compensate an 870?

I shot a friends lightweight 12-gauge with a Cutts-like compensator on it, and it kicks substantially less than my 870 which outweights it by 2 pounds.

Okay. I'm sold.

Now what is a good way to compensate my 870? Should I just pick up a compensated barrel from Remington? That works, but will cost me more than the gun. Are there new choke-tube compensators available? If so, I'll still need a new barrel because mine has no choke threads. Will holes drilled into the top of the barrel by a 'smith work?

JP enterprises makes a mid barrel compensator. dunno how much it costs or if they'll do pumpguns.

I have heard only good things about Vang-Comp, though I have no personal experience.

You can send it off to MagNaPort and they will EDM slots in the barrel for you. Works really well.

Could you not just port the barrel yourself and then manually polish away any burrs on the interior of the barrel? That seems to be the most cost effective way. :confused:
