Imagine a ball of flame the size of a pumpkin every time you fire a round. Recoil is hefty. Gun isn't pretty, and the design is archaic. They're beat to high heaven, over fifty years old, and shoot a cartridge twice as old.

And I really, really miss mine. :( I'd recommend a Pachmeyr slip-on recoil pad, small size. Oh, and one more thing--

Welcome to the High Road! :D

Awesome guns. Mine is an M38 - the same thing without the bayonet. You should put a marshmellow on the bayonet and fire. Much quicker than a campfire.

But not as tasty. :barf:

Welcome aboard!
Be sure and shop around and find the Soviet vintage ammo that is copper- washed. It gives the best 'pumpkin' flash!

Welcome....

I'm sure you'll enjoy your M44 shoulder-thumper, they're robust and cheap to feed. If you look around, you should be able to pick up an arsenal refinished big brother for it for around $40-$50... heck, you'll already have the ammunition, do you really need more reason? :D

Welcome to the High Road! Have lots of fun with your m44, I reccomond the small size limbsaver recoil pad(or substitute the pad of your choice). The m44 is one of those guns that everyone on the firing line leans back, sees whats going on, and starts nodding thier heads and grinning :). I love mine, and hope to add the big brother and other brother the 91/30 and m38 to my collection soon.

Am I the only one who doesn't think the recoil on the m44 isn't too bad? The steel plate and my shoulder agree pretty well anywho. Oddly, I find more recoil in my 30-06 rem 700 than the m44...

When you shoot it, you'll likely find you are more accurate with the bayonet extened than with it folded back. These carbines were intended to be carried and fired in combat with bayonets fixed.

Welcome to The High Road. Hope you like a lot of recoil, that M-44 can be a beast. My M-44 was my first rifle. 50 years old and the stock is beat to crap but the bolt and trigger are great. If you get a chance, try shooting it at night to watch the fireball. That old Ruskie surplus stuff really lights up!

Welcome!

I don't have a Mosin, but both of my brothers have 91/30's. They have some recoil, but they're decent rifles. I want one.

An M44 was my first bolt action gun. Everything's in good shape and I like it!

He's been in the safe for a while though. I think it's time he comes out to see the light again.

The M44 is a sweet old beastie! Rifle, ammo and accessories are cheap. It is dirt simple to repair. A good old beater that will take anything in North America is you do your part.
I have one that is is the process of being 'scouted'.....recoil is stiff (get a recoil pad...I got a pac slip on cheap), the fireball is impressive, and the bayonet...well, is interesting. I can live without it, but my girlfriend thinks it is cool(if they get that close, time for the .45 auto..in my opinion).
And another Jarhead? The Corps will create a foundation of tempered steel in your soul.....that will serve you for a lifetme! Did four years myself, 0351 Assaultman and though the times were amongst the most challenging in my life. they were the most 'real', and adventurous. Minor advice.....buy a small camera and take lots of pics of your experiences and adventures they'll be important when you get older, get a Leatherman Wave as a field tool, and volunteer for any advanced training you can cause you can learn the coolest things(where else can you fast rope outta helicopters, get free global tavel to exotic ports of call, learn rockclimbing, High Speed Cast and Recovery, demolitions, play with automatic weapons and get paid for it?).

Always good to have another mosin fan in the mix. For some reason the M44 is my favorite rifle. The recoil has never bothered me, I think it's all in the mind. You listen to enough people say it's gonna kick, and it's gonna kick.

Think of Iraq as a springboard to promotion.
I'll second the advice to volunteer for any training you can get.

My first M44 (and my first C&R for that matter) was a Romanian that I paid $199 for. At that time I had no idea what a C&R licence was. Just as well, it's still my favorite peice, no matter what the price. Shoots better than any other rifle in my collection.
