Hi, Folks! :)
I was surfing the Colt site... and just about stood up in my chair when I got to this page:
http://www.colt.com/CMCI/SAArmy.asp
Whoa!!! Is the Colt SAA currently being manufactured? What about availability and pricing? Is the quality fully up to scratch? Has anyone seen one?
How can these things be??
best,
StrikeEagle

Yes, and they are nice. I mean REALLY nice. I think they run $1k though. Check the online sites, you should find one.
If I wasn't so into 1911's and didn't have a wife, kids and a mortgage, I'd own a few.;)

I looked at the advertisement by Colt and question the list of pistoleros that was presented. I don't know them all but I believe the James Butler (Wild Bill) Hickock carried 1851 Navy Colts his whole life and Billy the Kid, in the only known picture of him had a Colt "Lightning". What say you historians? Quantrill

Nah. I'd rather get a USFA from Turnbull. Quality revolver and awesome finish. Money isn't a problem. I just want to get what I pay for. I like to shoot the guns I own.

Hi :)
Are you saying that USAF makes a BETTER SAA than Colt? They cost about the same...

Yes USFA makes a better SAA than Colt. Its really not that hard. The Colt SAAs had a pretty bad reputation for quality and performance in CAS for a while. People would get their $1500 guns and then have to turn around and pay more money to a smith to get the trigger and action cleaned up. You were getting a beautiful looking gun with the Colt name on it and little else. Maybe Colts have improved since then, I haven't kept up with CAS, but I wouldn't spend my money for one instead of a USFA.

"PS..USFA doesnt make an SAA...they make a "copy'' of an SAA....."
Fair enough! :p
I'd also like to know... what is the relationship of Colt to USFA? USFA claims to be 'The Only Gunmaker in Hartord" and that THEY... not Colt are 'Under the Dome'.
What's going on here? :)

Ah yes all the other SAAs are just copies. Kind of sad when a copy is better than the original but it happens. When Colt is involved it happens a lot.

You're right. It is a copy. A copy that has surpassed the original in terms of quality and function.
Now if you want a safe queen, but the Colt. I like to shoot the guns I buy. I'll buy the USFA. :neener:
Don't blame the messenger if Colt management, QC, and marketing dropped the ball and let a great civilian revolver and semi-auto market fall away while they went and played patty-cake with Uncle Sam. Seems the Uncle Sam deal wasn't what they hoped for either.

It is my understanding that Colt SAA's are now quality guns, but they are different from the old Colts. The USFA is now the closest thing going to the pre-WWII SAA. The fact is that any of them really need a tuneup by a good SA gunsmith. A pet peeve of mine is the extra heavy bolt spring, which results in gouges in the cylinder, and the heavy mainspring. Both ould be easy to fix in production, but the makers don't want to bother.
Just curiosity, but how much does it cost these days for a good tuneup on a SA revolver? I do my own work, and have lost track of what others are charging.

U.S. Firearms Company in Hartford, Connecticut has become within the past few years the favorite source for high quality American made Colt Single Action Army replicas. While there are numerous importers of foreign made Colt replicas, U.S. Firearms turns out nineteenth century firearms assembled with nineteenth century craftsmanship. Their parts are one hundred percent American made and assembled by American craftsmen.
Almost a year ago, I reviewed here the U.S. Firearms Rodeo revolver, which is their entry level SAA replica aimed at the Cowboy Action Shooting competitor. The Rodeo is a fine sixgun, lacking only the high-polish finish of their more expensive revolvers. Just a couple of months ago, Mike Cumpston reviewed here the U.S. Firearms Pre-War sixgun, which is the Single Action Army with the excellent Armory Blue and Bone Case finish. There has never been a better built production SAA than the Pre-War. It combines old world craftsmanship with modern metallurgy to produce a beautifully finished Colt replica that is better than the original.

Colt quality is—no pun intended, to be sure—a hit or miss proposition. That's not a recent development.

I notice that Turnbull is putting his name on a USFA/Turnbull Finished "PreWar" that describes just like the one markeded by USFA. The USFAs are good. I believe that some recent retro-changes in the Colt Single Actions and the improvement in quality that people are reporting may be a reaction to the success of the USFA.
As Tuslamal mentioned, I did review the USFA Prewar and found that I was glad I had bought it. I seen one glaring error in my review. I bought into the "Under the Dome" language in the advertising and thought the guns were being made in the old colt factory. USFA does have offices in a historic mall they have created in the old colt factory but the actual shop is a ways down the road. They do make all the parts in the USA including the springs, lockwork and major assemblies.
The SAA scene is changing so fast that it's hard to state any concrete facts about it. Uberti quality is at an all-time high right now. Next year who knows. They may replace a key manager with F&%$-O- the -Clown and send the whole operation into the toilet. USFA is riding high and doing a good job. They are expanding their line of guns and sometimes this, combined with high reviews from the gun press causes gun companies to abandon quality control in favor of rushing more guns out the door.

I have the Colt from their custom shop. It's the blue 5 1/2 in. Model P in 45LC and its much better than any of the copies I have saw or owned. Perhaps some of the Colt SA's have problems but mine is a shooter and that's what I use it for. As far as most of the Colt's needing work for CAS the Cowboy Action crowd has all of the copies and Colt's worked on including the USFA's. It's called looking for a edge.

Colt made SAA's fall under the adage, "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford one." Last price I saw was $1500+ USD.
