There is a big gun show tomorrow in knoxville, and I just settled a lawsuit. My wife said I can spend $600 on whatever I want, but I am trying to talk her up. ANyway, I can't decide what to get. I want another long gun for self-defense, SHTF type situations. It must be quality and last a long time, and a lot of shooting. Has to have a good durable finish. Economy is important- both cost of gun, accessories, and ammo.
Here is what I already have:
-Savage MK II bull barrel .22Lr rifle
-SAR-1 AK47
-Remington 870 express with extension
Here is what I am thinking of getting
-AR15 (I don't know which brand, help!) which I'd have to trade my SAR for
-VEPR II to share ammo and accessories with SAR
-Remington 870 Police with ghost rings to share ammo and accessories with my 870 express
I am big about keeping my guns similar to share ammo and accessories. This keeps my gun closet clutter to a minimum and allows me to have more stuff for my guns. Please help!!!

An 870 Police Magnum (Parkerized, ghost ringed, 7 shot, solidly built). $450 or so. Add a Surefire fore-end later for $185.
Or, trade the SAR1 in (had one myself) and get an AR15 16.5" flat top carbine, but unless you buy the lower/upper seperately, etc it'll cost you $750-800+.
Edit: The SAR-1 already covers your needs for fun plinker, reliable long service gun and past 30-yards SHTF holy crap! It's the LA Riots again! situations, the 870 PM will cover you for close range and indoors with buck and slugs. Especially since you have another 870 for familiarity purposes. Federal Tactical, Hornady TAP or Winchester Low Recoil 00 Buck will do very well in tight patterns and good performance.

I know its the SG forum but I'g going to recommend against the 870P.
You already have an 870. IMHO There are holes in your collection. Given the $600 cap I'd look for a shorter (18.5" to 20") bbl for the existing SG. Maybe one with rifle sights.
The rest would be spent on a bolt ation rifle capable of near MOA and with some energy out past 100 yards. Take a lok at the Savage 10 packages with the accutrigger and scope included. .243 or .308 would be fine choices.
Take whatever is left and get some ammo.

I'll go with Rupestris on this one. A long range rifle makes a lot of sense for crisis management. A 308 or 30-06 will do. Once everything out to the horizon is covered, get mo 870s...

Right now I live in a neighborhood of duplexes, in hilly east TN. The longest shot I could make is pushing 100 yards. I see most of my problems happening in my yard, which is why I am fine with a short AR, an AK, or a shotgun. Like I said I like to have two of everything, which points at a VEPR or a Rem 870P. Right now I am leaning towards the shotgun, but I just don't know...

If you are going to get an 870 for home defense. Get a beat up one. These things are great weapons with tons of accessories available for them. You can purchase a used one for about $150.00 or less at a gun show and add lighted for end ghost right sights, sling. ECT. Will under your $600 mark. Will leave room to purchase a Handgun i.e. S and W. revolver for about $200.00 or so.

The gap , if your interested in only short range situatons, is a handgun ! A short barrel ( 18 or 20 incher ) for the express and then a good handgun would be something to consider.

I already have a glock 19, a S&W model 65 3" and a S&W model 66 3" hivis. My wife is buying me a J-frame when I get my degree and work in an office, and I am hunting for a deal on a 4" model 66 or 65 or 686 (another purchase I don't know what to do) I am set for handguns for awhile.
I think I'm going to try to find a Remington 870P with ghost ring sights, and build it up from there for shooting slugs and buckshot. Ghost rings are so expensive to buy aftermarket and have installed that I will only get a shotgun that has them on from the factory.
Thanks for the ideas!

The 870P now comes factory with Wilson Combat Trak Lok ghost rings. Nice.

I'd also put in my vote for a decent bolt gun. $300 will buy a fair Savage .308 or 30/06 (used) and the remainder should be put towards the most expensive Leupold or Bushell Elite 4200 you can find.
