Are you going to buy S&W .500 Mag?
TexasRifleman

OK, S&W has our attention, and gobs of press. Everyone is watching this thing.
My question is. How many of you are really and truly planning on buying one of these things.
List is what, 1100-1300?
Do you plan on buying the S&W .500

Hello, for ome of us we have an affliction/addiction to the big bore guns and I for one will be happy to step into the 21st Centuries most powerful handgun club!
Actually, it's more of a 19th century design and I'm truthfully more fond of the DA design than the wrist wrenching cowboy magnums from the custom shops or Freedom Arms.

NO, I will stop with .454 thankyou!

Is I just recently "converted" to revolvers. I bought my first one just last week, a S&W 629 Ranger in .44mag.
Been a 1911 and SIG shooter forever, but this thing was just calling my name from the display case :)
So, for someone unfamiliar, I thought I was buying a pretty powerful gun in .44
Turns out I have something a little on the small side now!
Just wondered what everyone else thought about it.

Looks like a nice revolver that hunters and big bore enthusiasts will get a lot of use out of. Its just not the revolver for me.

Mebbe if they come out with a 6" tube. Seeing the X-frame in .454 Casull or .480 Ruger might be cool, too...

I will buy one when they drop in price and they make a 3-4 inch compensated one .Alaska here I come.:D

No for two reasons. 1) I have a good pre sellout S&W 629 that I shoot well and has all the power I'll need. 2) I won't buy a new S&W product. The agreement they signed is still binding, even if it isn't being enforced at this time.

Yes, in a 3-5" comp version :)

I do want to shoot one, just to say I did.
But buy one? No. Three reasons.
a. S&W agreement, that has not been officially and legally terminated.
b. Too expensive.
c. Key lock. I have stated in other places that I will not buy any gun with a key lock in it. From anybody.

Scroll down to find the picture, looks like a 4" barrel with comp.
Myself, I won't be buying a .500 S&W, I already have a Freedom Arms .454, more than enough for deer where I hunt.

Maybe, on the pre-owned market. I'm guessing a few owners will buy, shoot it once, & sell it because it's not what they expected. I'll let someone else take the initial price hit for me

You better check again, friend.
What'll this .500 do that a 44 mag wont do with proper load selection?
Pffft. (I don't think so Tim.)

Only if they make it into a Scandium Snubby, so I can replace the 329 as my ankle gun. :neener:

I don't plan on getting one. For me personally, anything bigger than my .44 mag I prefer to shoot from a rifle configuration. I think the .500 S&W would make an interesting lever gun or carbine caliber. Ammunition is pretty expensive though. Just my thoughts.

I've already got the .454 SRH and the Puma 92 (in .454) to go with it. I would, however, consider one if the used market dictated a $500.00 pricetag. :D

If Freedom Arms comes out with a SA gun for it I would, otherwise NO. (I'm preferring the single actions for wheelguns these days.)

I won't buy it because I have no use for such a hand cannon, 44 Magnum is all I need. As for not buying from S&W because of the sell out, that was the previous owner's doings. Why should I hurt the current ownership when they have not seen fit to enforce that abominable agreement?

Ahhh,
I need another .44 Special, and a PC .357 too. Unfortunitely, these may have to wait until my wife gets her new refrigerator
I kinda think the old 'frige works fine, and the Special & .357 are much more important....:p

NO.
Here's why: *If* I ever need that sort of Grizzly/Moose grade horsepower, I'll get there with an SA of some sort, either Freedom Arms or Ruger/BFR family (which are related and can swap parts).
We know that in 454, you can shoot it from a gun in the 40oz weight range and have it feel MORE comfortable than a Ruger DA SRH weighing around 58oz. The reason is that the SA grip is simply better at recoil control, esp. the Bisley and FA83 grip types.
Magnum Research will probably sell a 5-shot 500S&WMag very soon. Custom makers like Reeder/Stroh/Linebaugh will almost certainly start tweakin' Rugers for the caliber. Mind you, I don't think it's necessary - if you can't do it with 480Ruger, 454 or 475Linebaugh, it shouldn't be done .

I think I'll stick with my Model 29 (44 Mag) as it's about as powerful as I need. Also have a nickel Mod 27 (357 Mag) for backup.
I never say never, though. If I come across one for a song with a full box of ammo sans a few, you never know! :D
"Fired very little, almost full box of ammo inc." bargains
Heck, I've bought a passel of like new Colt 45 autos with most of the original box of ammo wid em. Mos folks just don't care for recoil. Their loss is your gain.

LOL! For the most part that's true, 99.99% of all handgun shooting can be done in 44Mag or 45LC+P power levels, including defense against black bear.
But the Griz or Brown...well...methinks that's another story.
And the Silluette(sp?) target crowd just LOVES big power.

Yes, but not from S&W, as soon as American Derringer offers one sign me up though.
Blackhawk
February 21, 2003, 05:37 PM
Not new, not used, and certainly not until after S&W totally repudiates "the agreement."
Why not used? Simple, buying a used S&W made while the agreement was in effect supports S&W by sustaining a viable used market for its products. Therefore, there's no difference between buying a new or used S&W product. S&W REALLY needs to UNDERSTAND and act on burying that dispicable agreement! :cuss:

Where's Ruger at on this .500? They was on the ball when the 44 mag came out. And will there be a .500 special? (Bulldog:D :D )
Anybody got a pic of the round to post?

I don't have a need for one. If I need more than a .44 or .45 Colt, I'll get a rifle.

44 magnum and hot 45 Colt loads will cover anything I have a desire to kill with a handgun. While I don't own one, I also have access to a Freedom Arms 454 Casull. If I need to kill something that a 454 won't kill with reasonable regularity, I'm taking a rifle. ;)

I know my limit and that's the .44 magnum. Very satisfied with my S&W 629 Classic and Ruger Bisley in .44 maggie. Both guns are powerful enough for any of my needs and still a pleasure to shoot.
I'll be satisfied to read about the stories and range reports from the "real" big bore shooters.
Safe shooting.

I can't think of one good reason to buy one, except that it's a handgun, which is usually enough. But this time, I think I'll pass. ;)

She sure is pretty, at least in the pictures I've seen, but I don't think I'll be running out and getting one any time soon.
It might consider it if SW engineers an auto-loader in .500, but I don't think we'll have to worry about that.

What effect do you think this will have at the local indoor handgun range? You woudl certainly attract a crowd, wether they would want to shoot it or YOU is another question. I know I would not be able to shoot it at my club, unless I went with a light Wadcutter load, say a 12 guage shotgun slug seated flush with the case mouth, over 20 grains of Bullseye :uhoh:
a .44 mag is enough for fun, beyond that a remmington 870 with slugs, or a regular rifle.
There are folks who love to shoot a 45-70 out of a TC Contender, or even a .308 round out of an xp-100 or an encore with a 14" barrel.
I guess you could think of it as a Contender revolver???
Come to think of it there are a lot of folks who would want one, just ask the guy at my club who has a 45-70 derringer.

February 26, 2003, 01:27 AM
Not to beat a dead horse, but I would seriously consider buying one of these. I don't care about justifying it, the fact that I want one is justification enough for me. I don't have to have some other "good" reason for buying it. One of the big reasons is because it keeps the liberals awake at night. I have considered buying a really big revolver in the past. I have three .44 Mags and a .45 Colt but when one of my buddies bought a .454, I considered getting one of those. I like the looks of the Smith, the caliber sounds very interesting. But it all comes back to the agreement. I just can't give in to the lefties, so I guess I won't buy one under the current conditions.

It's just TOOOOO big!
And I don't mean the bore diameter, I mean the general weight and frame size needed to harness a cartridge like that. Hell, a rifle would be easier to carry. Is Marlin listening? How about a nice little carbine in .50 S&W?
What would be really cool, and a handgun that I WOULD buy - for no apparent reason... is something along the lines of a .50 acp! Just a standard semi (or revolver with moon clips) shooting half inch diameter rounds. I know there is no real point to such a gun and that it wouldn't be significantly different than a .45... but I'd buy one.
