I have a pocket knife I recently bought from Wal-Mart for about 9 bucks so's I could have a knife on a pier-fishing trip I went on recently. It's the one on top in this (http://spln.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p1026730reg.jpg) picture.

So, first it opened okay, then it became really hard to open, and now, it's so loose I can open it with just a wrist-flick. Kind of a nice feature, but I'm thinking there's too much of a risk for injury from the knife opening for pocket carry. Can I tighten it? Did I buy a piece-of-c**p knife?

Sorry, but you bought crap.

The cheap Winchester knives at Wal-Mart are cheap chinese imports with Winchester's name on them. See, Winchester whores it's name out to anyone with cash these days.

The only decent knives with the Winchester name on them are slipjoints and even these are overpriced collector oriented pieces, not work knives.

Want an inexpensive, yet good knife, get a Schrade. Want an inexpensive, yet good one handed folder, get a Columbia River Knife Co knife.

The Chinese Wal-Mart Winchester Knife will serve you well for the tackle box. You can Tighten it up with an Allen Wrench.

I bought one of the Winchester-branded swiss-style 12-function knives at wal-mart the other day, seems to be decently well made, cost was $3.47.

I bought several of those at Wally Martinez Discount Sporting Goods and motor oil.

They are good cheap disposable knives. Thumb through the Cabelas catalog and you'll see the same knife, different name, for $20.00

Cut something, use as pry bar, use for screwdriver....throw it away. There is a use for Chinese crap.

Ah well. Only nine bucks.

General rule of thumb for tools: buy the best you can afford. They last longer, work better, are safer, and offer pride of ownership.

You got yourself a $9 knife. Throw it in the tackle-box and use the living hell out of it till it doesnt cut anymore. I'm sure that for normal cutting chores it will serve you well for a long time to come. You wont get fit and finish or anything pretty for $9. But, you will get something that cuts, and in the end thats what knives are for.

A friend of mine has had two Winchesters like this, not the same though. The first one is a piece of junk. The second one seems dependable, but still....
