glock v alien, would you intervene?

February 19, 2003, 11:46 AM
I can't believe how stupid some folks are. Good thing they're doing this stuff in CA, where very few folks are prepared to defend themselves.

I gotta believe that playing this stunt someplace like TX would result in 1 alien shoulder mount hung on the wall.

So the question is, would you intervene if you saw an alien attacking some folks stranded on the road?

Woman chased by fake alien sues reality TV show
Tue Feb 18, 8:06 PM ET Add Entertainment - Reuters/Variety TV to My Yahoo!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Kara Blanc thought she was being chased by a space alien on her way to a posh Hollywood party and was terrified. But the alien turned out to be an actor in a monster suit and the party was phony as well.

So now the Los Angeles grade school teacher and aspiring actress is fighting back, suing the new reality TV series "Scare Tactics," claiming she suffered severe emotional damage, court papers said Tuesday.

Blanc sued the Sci-Fi Channel, the producers of "Scare Tactics" and two actors for scaring her so badly that she had to be hospitalized several times for "physical injuries" and "severe emotional distress," her lawsuit said.

Blanc said she was a "nonconsenting and unwitting victim" of the hidden camera show with a science fiction twist.

According to Blanc's lawsuit, she was sucked into a "Scare Tactic" episode last March 1 by actors Mathew Mertha and Travis Draft, who said they were taking her to "an exclusive Hollywood industry party at a desert resort" near Los Angeles.

On the way to the resort, the car that the trio were riding in stalled in a remote desert road and Mertha and Draft "feigned that they were being seriously physically injured ... or killed " by a costumed "alien," the lawsuit said.

Mertha and Draft allegedly told a terrified Blanc to run into a "dark, desert canyon area" to escape, the suit said.

Hidden cameras secretly recorded her reaction to the staged scenario. Neither Blanc nor her attorney could be reached for comment Tuesday.

Blanc teaches dance, music, drama and performance art and is certified as a crisis counselor. She is also an aspiring actress who co-hosted a mock-documentary film with Draft.

Sci-Fi Channel spokeswoman Kat Stein declined comment on the case but said the premise of "Scare Tactics" was to film "friends setting their friends up with a prank."

Pending episodes feature campers who believe mythical mountain creature Big Foot attacks them, and limousine passengers who are chased by "government agents" when they stray into Area 51, a super-secret U.S. military facility at the center of UFO and conspiracy stories.

Heh - If I was producing that show, every contestant would get a strip search for weapons... But I suggest that would give away the premise of the show.

I can just imagine them trying that sorta thing with a few of the folks here... I pity the poor actor in the costume... If it isn't fatal, it'll at least be painful (after all, everyone knows that a grey's brain is in the lower abdomen...).

February 19, 2003, 12:17 PM
I must admit, I kinda dig shows like this, Trigger Happy TV on Comedy Central, and even Mtv's Jackass had its moments.

But, having said that, I seriously doubt that you could get away with doing a show like that anywhere by LA, New York, or London, for fear of being on the receiving end of a Mozambique Drill.

Think back to the actor in LA that answered the halloween party door holding a fake gun. The cop at the door had a real one. The end.

February 19, 2003, 12:29 PM
I have often wondered why nobody ever sues/files charges. I saw a couple that I realized if it had been me the focas of (joke) I would have done a few thousand $$$ in damage at the minimum.

February 19, 2003, 12:32 PM
This was a hidden camera show so the "contestant" didn't even know she was a participant in anything?

What next? "Hey, let's fake a mugging and see what happens!"

February 19, 2003, 12:41 PM
They probably would be suing me for double tapping one of the Aliens long before anyone got hurt...or acted like that got hurt.

I wonder if they will air the show once the lawsuit is settled? If the lady is smart she will use it as a demo tape to send to screenings. It's probably some of the best "acting" she has ever done!:D

Good Shooting

February 19, 2003, 04:45 PM
Good ideas gone bad. Sounds like a Fox show. And yeah, they had better put the "contestants" through a metal detector or someone could get hurt, or worse.

THR campout:

Scare Tactic Producer:"Hi all nice campfire"
Guy in bigfoot suit: "OOGA BOOGA BOOGA!"
Insert sound of Somalia firefight erupting from camp.
Shot of George Hill with 2 Berettas at slide lock "Damn I missed."
Shot of Oleg with smoking shotgun "I got a piece of him!"
Shot of Runt scowling and reloading large snubnosed revolver "He's still moving"
Shot of CR Sam (boom) "nope he ain't"
Shot of Tamara "hmmm I thought these Nyclads would penetrate better"
Shot of Dr.Rob re-holstering Hi-Power "You smell that?"
Shot of Art "Did bigfoot mess his britches?"
Shot of Denny slapping fresh mag into M-4 "Everybody ok?"
Shot of Kaylee prodding passed out producer with her foot "The new guy passed out, hey where's his gun?"

Roll credits.

I would agree with the girl. If someone chased me I wouldn't be very happy with them either...

February 19, 2003, 04:58 PM
The only question I would have afterward would be how much would a taxidermist charge to create an "actor in a Bigfoot suit" mount....

It doesn't sound like she's any good as a "crisis counselor" if a prank scared her into a lawyer's office.

No CCWs in LA except for the rich and famous.

I wonder if the finish on my Emerson is acid resitant? Supposedly they bleed that stuff.

Yeah - I'm disturbed...

Shot of Bogie wandering back to the cooler holding the jagged neck of a Shiner bottle, muttering "Dang - and it was half full too..."

Shot of Bogie walking away - "Okay - I'll be 100 yards away in a minute or so, so my scope will focus - stick a few Necco wafers on the thing somewhere, and someone bet me that I can't hit 'em all... Come on, folks! I need the cash! Come on?"

Who does Taxidermy on them?
So many unanswered questions. :D

Forget shooting the critter. I'd be all over introducing the "Alien" to the finer points of energy transfer via 3/4 ton Suburban. "Run critter! RUN! That's right. Who's your daddy now eh? Git on back to wher you came from... SPLAT! Ooops. That's gonna be a messy clean up."

After all... The alien might have some sort of organic body armor that would effectively defeat bullets???

February 19, 2003, 06:24 PM
....Space aliens are worth much more to the tabloids alive!!
A couple whacks with the baton and stuff the grey in the trunk. Head to the nearest office for the National Enquirer and you're in da money!

The Sci-Fi channel cancels Farscape, but they'll pick up a piece of crap show like this? Who're the mental marvels at the tiller over there?

Personally, I'd like to see them try to pull this in some back woods area.

Cue: Alien appears in clearing walking towards local.

Local: Ya'll ain't from round here are ya boy.

Cue Banjo

Local: Hey Cooter, looks like we's got us a trespasser. C'mer boy.

Well up here in Alaska, I guess aliens would fall under the "deleterious exotic wildlife" category. No bag limit, no closed season (if unconfined or unrestrained).

Alternatively, we also have a regulation that allows you to take any animal regardless of seasons and bag limits in defense of life or property. An alien whuppin up on a friend would probably fall in that category. Of course, if you took the alien under that rule, you couldn't keep him. You'd have to turn him in to the state.

As for the bigfoot idea. Who in their right mind goes camping w/o a gun?

February 19, 2003, 08:52 PM
ah, but that regulation musher, is also up to the interpretation of the LEO. example, a few years ago a man in east anchorage was walking around the wooded trails of his neighborhood with his wife, son, and dog. the son goes wandering off, the dog gets on the scent of a bull moose, and the man winds up having the moose charge towards him. he draws his .44 and unloads as the moose bowls him over. APD tried charging him with 'discharge of a firearm within city limits'. fish & game overturned the charge after they made the observation that he fired only in self defense.

with that in mind, i sure dont want to ever have to kill a bear thats charging me. i'd have to skin it, and hand over the skull and paws to DF&G.

wonder if the state would demand that the carcass of an alien be donated to Beans Cafe to feed the homeless?

February 19, 2003, 09:21 PM
Well, sure I think donating the meat to Beans would be just fine. Just tell them to cook it until it isn't green anymore.

Nice thing about an alien, is that you could even keep a tentacle or two for yourself. Who's to say how many it was supposed to have in the first place? for the APD incident, I'm not suprised.

February 19, 2003, 10:05 PM
the premise of "Scare Tactics" was to film "friends setting their friends up with a prank."Not my friends....

February 20, 2003, 01:02 AM
And brought to you from the liberal pornographers of the People's Democratic Socialist Republic of California.

Seriously, that woman should get a large monetary apology from the production company. Michael Jackson was paid $ 2.5 million for a recent interview... and the interview was voluntary. Whoever dreamed up the idea should leave court wearing shower shoes and boxers.

And maybe she should learn not to leave town without some kind of equalizer.

I wonder if the alien suit is pepper spray proof?

February 20, 2003, 01:06 AM
I saw one a while back where a guy in a sasquatch suit was jumping out of the woods and attacking hikers, I'm amazed the guy didn't get himself shot.

February 20, 2003, 10:16 AM
A full blast of fox labs through the eye holes into the suit would probably do just fine. I'd hope the thing wasn't too hard to get off.

February 20, 2003, 10:59 AM
Were Fox's attorneys asleep at the wheel?

"So, the premise of this show is to intentionally terrify someone, which by definition means to inflict severe emotional distress upon them? And you hope they have a physicial response, such as passing out or puking in order to boost ratings? Gee, I don't see a problem with that."

February 20, 2003, 11:17 AM
Shot of Kaylee prodding passed out producer with her foot "The new guy passed out, hey where's his gun?"

Bwahahahahah, I'm dying here. Hey where's his gun? I love it.

That was my first though when I saw the bigfoot commercial. Let bigfoot come a knocking on my sliding glass door. Honey, he's a big one better bring me the 12 gauge to finish him off.

February 20, 2003, 12:19 PM
I really think the prank victims on these shows are approached before hand and asked to sign disclaimers/waivers/exculpatory statements that their partcipation is contigent on. Perhaps they are not told the exact nature / extent of the prank...

I can't believe anybody in our litigation-obsessed society would think that they could get away with this without a major lawsuit for long. Especially when all of these things fall under 'delict' tort law, and would bring hefty punitive judgements...

February 20, 2003, 01:43 PM
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Kara Blanc thought she was being chased by a space alien on her way to a posh Hollywood party and was terrified. But the alien turned out to be an actor in a monster suit...the Los Angeles grade school teacher and aspiring actress...

Everything you needed to know about the mental level of Hollywood and the CA education system rolled into one:rolleyes:

heheehe... love it preacherman, love it.

You guys know I tried to market the Cowblind? Otherwise known as the trojan cow. It's a hollwed out polystyrene Heifer with seating for two, dual firing ports and all the pleasures of home while awaiting the arrival of alien visitors.

Only one problem.

The bull didn't know it was fake. :what:

My product testers were in the hospital for weeks.

February 20, 2003, 09:27 PM
Rob... that is... disgusting...

February 20, 2003, 10:35 PM
I can see this happening to me and my family.

Scenerio: DE44mag camping with family sees bigfoot, Sounds of lage automag firing, voice"damnd it's empty" sounds of 45auto firing, voice " Damnd thing jammed, Honey weres your .38?" Wifes voice " Sorry hon, but it's empty." "But he's still moving!" Sound of more shots fired, Oldest daughters voice "Don't worry Dad, I got him with the FNFAL." Then the voices of my two youngest daughters crying, "but we didn't get to shoot!!!!":neener: :neener: :neener:

February 20, 2003, 10:57 PM
To sum up: Reality TV series "Scare Tactics" Vs "TFL"= "Alien Autopsy II"

"My god it's an invasion of the REVERSE POD PEOPLE!. Outside they look like aliens but once you shoot them down and skin them they look like... INTERNS!!:what:

April 10, 2003, 11:16 AM
I know I'm rehashing an older thread, but I figured this was better than starting a new one..

I was wondering if you guys watched the first "Scare Tactics" episode? The "gag" mentioned on this thread was the first one they showed. They left out the part about her running into the canyon... And BTW, that was no "grey" alien. The guy in that suit musta been over 7 ft tall. Excellent makeup.

I was thinking the whole time "man, I hope nobody on these things carries... There's gonna be a problem at some point".

Sure enough, the very last one... A sister sets up her brother in a "hitchhiker" (who is an actor) scenario where the driver (actor too) is taking them to a party... Short version... they find a severed human head (complete with real flies!!!) in the hitchhiker's bowling bag while he's "relieving himself" on the side of the road. When he gets back in, he sees the flies, and checks his bag, then starts freaking out... He pulls out a big (fake) knife and stabs the driver... The brother (the only one not "in" on it) jumps up from the back seat and starts pounding the hitchhiker in the head quickly and repeatedly :D He must have hit the guy 15 times at least while everyone else is trying to stop him. I couldn't stop laughing. You could see the effects of the adrenaline shooting through him... He had a "fight or flight" moment, and he was gonna fight! If there had been anything worthy of clubbing a person with, I'm pretty sure that guy would have used it. He even commented at one point prior "man this guy's creepy, I shoulda brought my #%$'in knife" :what:

Anyway, this show either won't be on long, or will be on until some idiot plays a joke on a THR member who blows somebody away...

I'm fairly confident that my friends know better.

April 10, 2003, 01:14 PM
I saw that show. I'm amazed that guy didn't do serious damage to the hitchhiker. The other part where they were supposed to be testing a plasma cannon seemed really stupid to me. I really don't think this show will be on long either. It might run for a couple of seasons if they avoid putting people in situations that make folks think they're in danger of being physically harmed.

April 10, 2003, 01:57 PM
I'm amazed that guy didn't do serious damage to the hitchhiker.
Most of you guys probably already know this... when your adrenaline is pumping like BOTH those guys' had to be... you don't feel the pain, you just feel that your head is being "moved quickly" :) If you look at the part right after the punching stops, the left side of the hitcher's head was extremely red, and you could tell he was mad for a second... I bet he was in a lot of pain the next morning. (that's when it always hit me (pun intended) the worst).

April 10, 2003, 02:02 PM
As for the bigfoot idea. Who in their right mind goes camping w/o a gun?

Who in their right mind goes ANYWHERE without a gun??

April 10, 2003, 02:13 PM

oh wait, you said RIGHT bad.

April 10, 2003, 02:16 PM
Saw the show. The girl in question was laughing her butt off after it came out that it was a joke.

April 10, 2003, 02:38 PM
I'll never understand why people think that scaring the bejezus out of another person (let alone someone they LIKE) is funny. I have never enjoyed practical jokes or pranks, even as a kid.

When I teach my basic pistol class, I tell people that when they have a gun in the house, that their family has GOT TO UNDERSTAND that there is no room for "harmless pranks", because they can get someone killed.

Remember the story several months ago about the young Asian girl who was engaged to a gun owner? She and her sister hid in the fiance's closet, planning to jump out and "scare him" when he came home from work.... yeah you can see where this is going.

They scared him, all right. So much so that he shot and killed his fiancee. Tragic, but avoidable. Granted, rule number four applies, he probably should have been more certain of his target before firing, however, if you come home and you are certain that someone is hiding in your closet, dare I say, it's a judgment call.

I just don't get scaring people for fun, especially in a situation where they have no way of knowing it's a prank. It's sadistic and dangerous, IMO.

April 10, 2003, 02:39 PM
I've watched 2 episodes of this show.

Out of 8 or so victims I can only think of a couple who would have survived the natural selection process.

1. The guy who punched out the hitchhiker.
2. The dude who ditched his date and ran from the alien.

Everybody else would have gotten eaten. :)

Personally I find the show interesting, kind of like when you drive past a car wreck. You can't help but look.

Watching this show just shows how dumb most of the people in our society are.

The biggest ninnys? Why do people stand in one place and scream when a maniac with a machete is hacking his way into your cabin? Why do some people feel the need to be polite even after they just witnessed gross medical incompetence resulting in a death?

I'll keep watching just so I can pat myself on the back and say, damn, I'm glad I'm not that lame! :p

April 10, 2003, 02:47 PM
I wonder if they will air the show once the lawsuit is settled?

Actually they did show it ... only after the first lady sued they went and re-did the prank on someone else and showed that one.

ya know ... there are parts of California where the serfs can get CCWs ... would have sucked for the alien actor if the "victim" would have been from one of those parts and chose not to tell their liberal buddies they carried (half the people I know don't even know I own a gun, let alone carry)

April 10, 2003, 03:15 PM
THR campout.

ROTFL. I needed that, thanks! I'd pay money for a video. I'm guessing ordering instructions would be attached to article and pics in the SWAT, Special Edition of Street Smarts ;)

Ok , now to get the spilled soda off the carpet...

April 10, 2003, 04:11 PM
they are not called space aliens... the correct term is extra-terrestial undocumented immigrant :D

April 10, 2003, 05:10 PM
Oh man!!! I was reading this thread at work, and EVERYBODY is staring!!
I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe!!!
One of my co-workers came over and look at the "Skunk with an Alien" pic, I tried to explain it but couldn't speak. He walked away muttering "Freaks, freaks with guns,.... " :)
He is pro 2nd amend but doesn't post on forums except WWII Online.
I thought I was gonna have a stroke reading about the brother beating the crap out of the actor, Way to go!!

April 10, 2003, 05:39 PM
Did ya'll see the scenario in the show with the 'plasma gun'? They had this huge silvery sci-fi monstosity on a tripod, and got some guy who had only ever shot a BB gun to test it out. They had some psuedo-military guy in a buzzcut and a green jumpsuit who helped the mark shoot the gun, and another older guy who sat in a shack downrange to "monitor the test". The mark was a little timid, but after the first shot with the 'gun' the target (which was rigged with some pyrotechnics) blew up, he had more fun shooting the second target. Problem was the third target was right over the shack that the older guy was sitting in to monitor the test. The mark says something like "You sure you want me to shoot that? Isn't it too close?" At this point I'm yelling "FOURTH RULE, YOU @#$^" at the TV... :D Of course he doesn't hit the third target, and the shack blows up. Then the mark starts whining like a little girl. Sort of pathetic.

April 10, 2003, 08:02 PM
I would love to see the show with the guy who fought back but man the producers are lucky he didnt know how to deliver fatal blows as it sounds like he had time to do it with getting 15 shots in. What do they expect a person to do when they think they just saw someone stabbed? Not everyone runs - well maybe in hollywood they do.

These shows better be careful. I bet a lot of people who carry dont tell their co-workers who they are friends with let alone all of their regular friends.

My wife saw that commercial for the show, and the first thing she said was, "I'd feel sorry for anyone who would try to pull a stunt like that on you."

April 10, 2003, 08:39 PM
I kinda figured someone would sue and/or shoot one of the actors. You don't know what you are digging into when you try to scare people like that. If some Yeti thing stuck his face up to MY camper, it wouldn't be alive much longer. Double aught buck to the face. :D

April 11, 2003, 04:53 PM
I've only seen commercials. If you listen during the "bigfoot at the camper" piece, one of the people asks the above question. My first thought when I heard it was Tamara:

Cop: "Do you have any weapons?"

Tam:"Yeah. What d' ya want?"

April 11, 2003, 05:34 PM
They had an almost near "real" incident in one of them. Some guys sister set him up. One of her friends was driving and they picked up a hitch hicker. The brother and sister were in the back and the hicker was in front with the driver. They stop to let the hicker out to relieve himself. The driver starts riflign through the hitchhikers bag and they find a "head".

Before the hitchhiker gets back into the car, the brother states, "Man I knew I should have brought my knife with me".

The hitch hiker gets back into the car, starts screaming about someone going through his bag, pulls out one of those fake knives and "stabs" the driver.

The brother not knowing that this is a setup starts wailing on the hitch hiker. They finally get the brother to stop punching enough to tell him it was a prank. If that happened to me the guy with the knife would have had his neck snapped rather quickly.

As much as I like the candid camera/pranks premise, this show will not last long before the producers are poor from lawsuits. It's either that or all of tem will have to be staged 100% with actors and they will be "reenactments" or something.

April 11, 2003, 06:50 PM
Pulling these kind of pranks is beyond stupid, and is a great way to speed along the process of ‘survival of the fit'. Somebody is bound to die eventually.

That said, if you are so stupid that you honestly believe an alien from outer space is trying to kill you, I hope you die a quick death and clean up the gene pool. I know that's cold blooded, but anybody who really believes an alien from outer space is chasing them doesn't have enough common sense to be allowed to pass on their genetics. :p
