Serial number database?

Is there any kind of record that can be searched to find out when, where, and what happened with a particular gun? I'm asking because I'd like to trace the history of the 1918 Colt M1911 I have on layaway. I'd love to know where it has been all these years.

Thanks, MIkey D...

I don't believe there is such a database, and I'm glad there isn't. While it would be nice for gun collectors, it would also require national gun registration.

As for your gun. If you will post the serial number, but use the letter "x" for the last two numbers, as for example: 1862xx I may be able to trace it from Colt to where it was first delivered. Usually that would be Springfield Arsenal, and if that was what happened you might be able to check their records to see if the gun turned up. Beyond that you are unlikely to find anything.

Springfield Research Service may have the pistol in it's database if it was in the military service. See the link.
