While I love Kydex holsters, they are not the best choice for any pistol that uses a conventional finish.
Even when kept meticulously clean, non-lined Kydex or any plastic type holster will act as an abrasive.
Plain Kydex is best employed with Stainless steel or Tenifer finishes which will stand up to the abrasive quality of these holsters.
Safariland and Uncle Mikes now produce Kydex/Plastic holsters with soft linings to protect finishes and these are recommended for standard finish guns.
There are no Finish problems with the XD pistol that I am aware of other than improper holster choice.

That's my recently NIB bought XD after 2 weeks of every day carry in a Don Hume Leather holster.

BTW; that picture was taken about 1 or 2 weeks ago; the gun has more wear by now.

I look at finish wear as an opportunity to send it to Tripp Research. :D

I have my XD9Tac in a Kydex holster. At first I was annoyed by the wear, but much like that first door ding on a new car, you accept it. Yes, the finish isn't the greatest, but everything that get's used will show wear.

There many reports from XD owners that arent say thrilled but the weak finish on their guns but hey like Sactown says you can always have it sent to Virgil or just get the two tone XDs.

I've owned four XDs and haven't had the problems that some complain about.

That is what I did.

I carry my XD-9 sub in both leather and kydex, 6 months now, no rust, only normal wear. I have not had any problems.

I just got mine and am happy with it.
I've read over at the HS 2000 & SA-XD forum, that some owners have sent their XD's back to SA for a re-finish. It was stated that they got the black armory-kote for free.

Here's the link to the forum:

Yes, but only if you are willing to wait 1 - 3 months for the return of your gun. I am not, that kind of waiting time is not acceptable for any kind of repair.

I agree.
If it happens to mine, off it goes to Tripp or Robar! :D

I've had an XD40 for about two years. Love the gun. Shot it and carried it LOTS. No finish problems with mine. It even lives in a leather holster.

I have refinished a lot of XD's . Mostly because people want them in a different color. If you want your XD in a rust resistant Black coating try a Teflon or Polymer finish . They are very durable and not as shiney or as expensive as hard chrome.

We refinish XD slides for $49.00

CCR; I am planning already for quite some time to send you one of my guns but I am just having such a hard time to part with any of them :)
You say the slide costs 50 bucks, how much would it be to have all metal parts refinished (Slide, Barrel, Grip Safety, Trigger, Mag Catch, Pins - I would send you only the parts)?

Todesengel,
The cost would be $49.00 for the slide and $20.00 for the parts

So it would be about $70.00 for everything metal on the XD....
Would that finish be in Gun-Kote or Dura Finish?

I would suggest Gunkote or one of my custom finishes . Duracoat is good but I mainly use it for plastics and polymers

Thanks for the info CCR! :)

Onmilo, I have to disagree. Nothing wears a finish faster than leather. Kydex holsters retain the pistol by pinching the trigger bar, nothing else. Leather is tight and in contact with most of the pistol slide/frame.

Regardless, all pistols will show holster wear.

XD's have a well documented problem with the finish being sub-par and corrosion problems. Get the two tone or fork over more cash to finish what the Croats started.

I have an XD-40, just keep it oiled nicely and no problems will arise, or shouldn't.

When I first got mine I let the slide soak overnight, exept for the night sights, in a good thick layer of Gun oil. Every since then it has ridden in a leather holster by Goodrich and Gould with not one finish problem. I have given it a few oil baths in between for good measure.

Oh, I also have oiled the inside of the leather holster very well, made it a lot smoother, it produces no wear that I can see. I think the oiled leather and a tight holster help this.
