Just a quick question - is any of the Czech made 7.62x54 ammunition (that does not have a colored tip) steel cored?

Don't know, but I do know that gray tipped bullets are lead core; the color denotes the light ball round.

Hrm. I ordered some ammunition, and received silver tip (which happens to be steel core - magnet stuck right to it). The picture of the rounds (which was taken by the seller) showed rounds with no markings. Unfortunately, this is a problem because the range does not allow steel core, and the only outdoor ranges around have membership fees of $$$$$$$.

Are you sure that it is steel core, and not a thin steel jacket over a lead core? I remember reading this somewhere in the last several months. You might wish to take one round apart with a bullet puller, and then hacksaw the bullet to verify this.

Funny you mention that, I checked that this morning :p

I pulled the bullet and cut it. I was able to get down to a steel rod in the center (which is visible from the back of the bullet too). Magnet sticks right to it...

The range allows .50 BMG, but I don't know if I could convince them to let us use this steel-cored 7.62x54. Does anyone have specs on the penetration of this round?

Where did you get this stuff, and how much did you pay?

Oh, and we're waiting for a range report on the accuracy of this stuff.

I got it from ammoman.com (Very quick and reliable from my first order with them. Will definitely order again from him). $78 for $780 rounds, shipping included.

Stumbled across this thread (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20705&highlight=7.62x54+AND+silver) about silver tip and indoors ranges. From the looks of it, I'm SOL in that respect.

Oh well, I'll just try and hunt down an outdoor range that may be hidden somewhere...

Will give a range report when we actually find somewhere to shoot :D
