I love my troops and served... but in a completely unrelated not so emotional way - (as in if we weren't there any more etc... or if this was an enemy doing this trying to draw american sniperfire)

Sniper trainer to sniper trainee: "Now this is what we call a 'bank shot'"

Are you suggesting that a sniper round might ricochet off the kevlar and hit the soldier? Because I wondered about the possibility of that too.

Nope. Even a 5.56 NATO will penatrate both sides of that helmet. It is made to deflect fragmentation, not bullets. At the Air Force Special Operations School in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, they have one of those helmets in a display case with a bunch of entry/exit holes in it. Each one is labeled with a marker "7.62x29", "5.56x45", etc...

Actually, it just depends on whether or not it's "your day." There are as many pictures of ballistic helmets that worked against rifle fire as there are that didn't. It comes down to a lot of physics and angles and just pure luck. But, yes, they are made to stop fragments and not bullets.

"Oh, great. Now my nose starts itching."

I've heard about countersnipers doing this sort of thing before. They hold up a dummy head and look at the angle of the shot through the dummy head and search for the sniper in that area. I think it started in WWI and was also used heavily in WWII.

The new issue helmets are designed to stop up 7.62 rounds. When I went through the Rapid Fielding program at Camp Victory, I got issued one. It is also almost a pound lighter and fits a lot better. The old head band is gone and multiple adjustable pads are used instead. It is a much better helmet.

I was told if I lost it, I would have to pony up $850. I kept really good track of it.

"Hey Stifler, stick this on and stand up!"

This trick goes back to WW1 or possibly even the Civil War (I've read accounts of countersnipers doing this with a hat and a ramrod in the Civil War). In WW1 the French made paper-mache heads with painted faces, strapped a helmet on... some even had a lit cigarette in the mouth with a tube so the hoister could puff on it. When it was hit, down they bring it as realistically as possible, and compare angles.

But if I decoy an RPG team instead of the &^%$#@@(* sniper team, we're all *&^%'d.

When I was a PFC, I tried this in Bosnia. Somebody hit it with an Airsoft (TM) round.

You sure they don't have a ZUSU 23-4?

It's simple, if he hits it, we touch him, if he misses by five feet or more, we WANT him covering this sector!
