I have little experience with the FN 49, but my experiences with the Steyrs have been extremely positive. I own two and neither has ever had a single malfunction. Accuracy is incredible. Since you are considering as a duty weapon, you get the added benefits of full-capacity magazines... :)

Here's a 30-round group at 30 feet.

I love my Steyr M40, but haven't touched the FN so I can't say for sure. However I've heard the FN has horrible, gritty a 12lb trigger.

My M40 has a sweet, light trigger that feels better then a Glock.

Well...around here...if someone OWNS a steyr..(like myself) they LOVE it...

If someone doesnt own a steyr...they may or may not have good things to say.

The steyr is an unconventional pistol to say the least...You will find things on the steyr that are not available on other pistols....

HOWEVER...some people like these things, others dont...It is my impression that if someone doesnt like the unique aspects of the steyr such as:

-trapezoidal sights
-manual safety in the trigger well
-ergonomic grip angle
-extremely low bore axis (lowest i have seen)
-etc..

...then they will not purchase a steyr pistol in the first place. I was one of those people who loved everything about it, with one exception:
I would have liked to have a decocker similar to the ones found in the Walther p99. But that is personal preference. the other things I liked about the steyr outweighed that discrepancy.

Also the steyr is the most accurate and gentle (in terms of recoil) pistol I have ever shot. The reliability of my M9 and my brothers M40 have been impeccable.

The only Con I can think of is the scarce availability of holsters for it...Galco makes the fletch high ride holster...and it fits great for CCW. However, I must admit, I never tried any "duty" holsters for it...So I am not sure what would fit.

I have been told that duty holsters that work with the large frame rugers may work well with the steyr pistols. You can always have a kydex holster made...and I think that blade tech has some experience with making holsters for the steyr.

I have ZERO experience with the FN 49...so i can not comment on that psitol.

My suggestion is that you find someone with a Steyr and ask to test fire it...You may have a hard time running across someone who owns one...and maybe a harder time finding someone with an FN.....Happy shopping!!

I recently owned a Steyr M40, and sold it. But I would recommend it highly! Got your attention? Briefly, here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
Accuracy - At 10 yards, offhand, with cheap ammo, 6 rounds into 1.8 inches, ten rounds into about 2.5 inches
Ergonomics - Very comfortable in my hand. Nice grip angle, and pointing capability.
Disassembly - Very easy to field strip. Took about 3-4 seconds, if you were taking your time
Manual safety set up

Cons:
Holster availability
Ergonomics - In my hand, the curved portion of the backstrap that extends over the hand slammed into the knuckle at the base of the thumb. After a few rounds, it really hurt. After thirty rounds, the base of the thumb was sore for the remainder of the day
Sights - They do work relatively well, but can take some getting used to.

Bottom line, great gun, and I would not have sold it, had I not had the issue with it bashing my thumb.

FWIW,

Its hard to believe that FN put the 49 out with such a brutal trigger.I would have got one if it would have even been more like 8 pounds. Its very well made.

Steyr is a great gun nice soft trigger and a great feel. The 49 is a great gun but the trigger is very heavy. I can say that you can find both at a really good price. I have seen both for about 300.00. I would go with a CZ40.

I guess that would be an issue is finding a duty holster for either one. A friend of mine owns a security guard company and was looking for an inexpensive sidearm. Thanks for all your thoughts.

i had a tough time finding a OWB holster for the steyr m series. the only one that fit was one for a ruger p89 from galco. well, it wasnt the ONLY one, but the only one in the store i went to. :D

i've got an order in to a guy who makes custom holsters, it will probably take a while before he gets a sample to work on though. its going to be sharkskin with a matching belt.

I had an excellent OWB holster made by fellow TFLer Mark Waldon (not sure he made the move to THR).

His web site is: http://www.waldonholsters.com (site seems to be going through a redesign or something).

Probably the FN just for the simple reason I've had two of them and they both performed flawlessly. It's big, ugly and got one heck of a heavy trigger pull though. Oh yea there also relatively cheap and made in my hometown by the way.

emann,

why'd you get rid of them?

They were to big and as much as I tried I just couldn't grow to like that heavy trigger pull.

If you're in Colorado there's a fellow THR member selling a M9 for $275 (with a holster)
