I have only shot in an IDPA match once. I had a great time. I shot with the only handgun I had that was practical to use, a Colt Gold Cup. I was shooting reloads and had some ammo issues, but I still had a great time shooting. I am interested in getting a little more serious about handgun shooting and CCW.

What I want to shoot/carry is a Ruger GP-100 with a 4” barrel. Is it IDPA legal to modify a revolver to use moon clips? I like the idea of moon clips vice speed loaders.

Who makes a serious holster for the GP-100? I am interested in Kydex mainly, but leather is ok too.

Where are some IDPA clubs near Tampa? (I would prefer not to drive more than an hour).

In a word, no. The gun needs to be a production run moon clip gun to be legal. You could have the gun converted but would be required to use speed loaders at an IDPA match. Moon clips would only be for carry.

For my revolver, I use Mike Benedict's holster. www.talontactical.com For concealed carry, I am getting ready to purchase an IWB holster from http://www.hoffners.com/ The revolver holster he has that is high ride is very comfortable. A friend has one and I was impressed.

From the IDPA web site http://www.idpa.com/clublist.asp?state=FL

Good luck, it is a great sport. Revolvers will make you think a little to the point at times your head may hurt ;)

As RGS said, moon clip conversions can't be used in IDPA. Safariland Comp-III speedloaders are arguably just as fast.

For kydex holsters, speedloader carriers, and moonclip carriers, you might want to check this site: www.pistolpacking.com.

I use the Ready Tactical Products Kydex holsters shown at pistolpacking.com except for a couple of Talon Tacticals I bought before Chris S. started up Ready.

I have shot IDPA in the Tampa area, at Southern Exposure near Lakeland and the Guncraft range at Ruskin. Others within a reasonable combat radius, listed at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~tmgoethe/FLIDPA.htm

There is a shooter there, Mack R., who competes with a 3 inch GP with full charge magnums. He is a Serious Defensive shooter.

I have friends in the area, recently moved from Temple Terrace to Ruskin, so I always have a place to crash when I need a winter vacation. They even went with me to the '04 Florida State in Orlando last Feb. and managed to make shooting a spectator sport.

Were the reloads that your GC would not handle yours or gunshow/gun store junk? If the first, work on QC with a cartridge gauge. If the latter, take up handloading or buy WWB at walmart.

I hate to admit it but they were mine. They were one of my first attempts at loading, I haven't had any problem with any loads after that.

Thanks for the links. I haven't had my GC out in years, I may have to take it out to shoot in one of the local shoots.

Hmmm. If you want to shoot a revolver with moon clips, why not try IPSC?

I shoot a revolver every Tuesday night at the St. Pete Police Pistol Range in St. Petersburg.

Let me know if you want the info.

Also, they shoot IDPA at the Wyoming Antelope Club in Pinellas Park on Tuesday nights.
