I guess only a jerk would point out that you listed several cartridges rather than only different calibers. :p
Favorite is probably the 45ACP though I can't imagine being without a 9mm and a 22LR.

OK. My favorite 4 are .22, .38 spl, 9minimeter and .45 ACP. I'll give up all the others.

If I were forced to make a choice for one in a defensive role while still allowed a long gun it would be .45 ACP. If I was limited to one weapon and it was a handgun I would go with the .357 mag.
For me the .45 ACP is the perfect blend of power and controlability (especially with a 1911) for defense. However, no one can argue that the .357 is potent against most two and four-legged critters. If I had only one weapon and it was a handgun, I would take a good 4" .357 and I could both fight and hunt with it.
So, depending on the situation, that's my two cents.

Can't vote cause there are more than 1. But favorites are:
45 ACP
45 Colt
41 Mag
10mm
357 Mag
38 Super
9mm
22 LR
Others of interest:
38 Spl
9x23
The order is by bullet size largest to smallest. I really put more emphasise in the platform, if I have a nice pistol I can like just about them all. Not interested in a 25 ACP though.

9mm. Cheap, abundant, mild to shoot, effective. My favorite all around cartridge.

Tough choice. Although my instinct was to say .22lr, I'll go with .357 Magnum. It's more versatile, allowing everything from low recoil target shooting to full bore hunting to effective self defense.

between 22 and 357 I had to give it some thought. The 357 wins out because of versatility.

No, it would be the 45ACP anyhow.

Cast another vote for the 9x19mm. Easy to use by a wide range of shooters, available throughout the world, cheap enough so practice won't break the bank, comes in platforms that fit most every size hand, effective for most jobs, able to initiate caliber war debates at the drop of a hat ...

9mm.
The top 9mm loads offer nearly equivalent performance to the top .45, .40 and .357 SIG loads, with respect to total energy, penetration, and expansion. The other loads do slightly outperform the 9mm, but one must take that in the context of the myriad variables present in a lethal force encounter--that .25" less of penetration is one of the last things I'd be concerned with.
The 9mm has an edge in capacity as well as affordability, which is important if one practices as often as one should.

9MM
Cheap & plentyful ammo, easy to shoot yet still has loads that will knock a man down.

I'm not surprised about the popularity of .357, 9MM and .45ACP (though the 9MM would probably top my list of these centerfire's). I'm really surprised though that the .22 didn't rank much higher. Due to the low cost of ammo, availability of realitivly inexpensive but high quality firearms that use it - combined with the accuracy & comfort of shooting .22's - I find it hard to believe that it's not at least the MOST USED round - even if it's not necessarily considered to be the MOST FAVORITE.
If I could only have one round - it would be .22LR.

It's hard for me to vote for my favorite caliber without thinking about my favorite gun. I traded in my SIG P220 on a Smith 625-5". I wanted to stay with .45 ACP, but was not satisfied with my ability to shoot the P220. The 625 has proven to be reliable, accurate and as it warms up, I am warming up to it. However, my Smith 629 still holds place of pride in my heart. Loaded with .44 specials, it is a magnificent machine.
That being said, I rely on the 625 as my daily companion. (+P Gold Dots sing a satisfying song, especially with 518 foot pounds of muzzle energy.

10mm for it's versatility. It's small enough to have a large capacity in a resonably sized double stack and to be in a compact pistol. There's a good revolver chambered in it and I think it's the perfect candidate for a 5 shot snubby. It can be loaded all over the board from mild to wild for target, defense, and hunting with bullet weights from 135 to 220 gr.
If I could only have one, it would be the most versatile, and what I would want.

I love the 45 ACP but had to vote for the .44 Mag, it's just too darn versatile. Shotloads, lightweights, heavyweights, mildish for SD, superlight for training, fullbore for hunting/special purpose, easy to load for, and on and on...:)

With only one handgun caliber available, priorities mandate that the nod goes to true defensive capability, as this is the handgun's primary role.
When one needs serious defensive handgun capability, the .45 acp is still King.

I too would have listed the .45 Colt instead of the 50AE.
The 357 Mag and the 45 Colt, would be hard to choose between the two. They are great in handguns and rifles both! But since no .45 Colt, the 357 Mag is what I voted on, just too versatile. The 44 Mag is a close second, same reasons apply.

I voted for 10mm even though I don't even own one gun in that caliber. However, I think it could replace all the other calibers IF it was the only caliber available. The round could be loaded for everything from lightweight plinking, target shooting, self defense, to hunting dangerous game.
My first thought was .357Mag, but that would be difficult to use in a semi-auto. The 10mm would allow a full range of handguns in semi-auto or revolver platforms.

Without a doubt, the .41Magnum. I've been packing one since the '60s and it's never let me down. It's saved my bacon on more than one occassion, keeping a p.o.'d old range cow off me. I've got the cartridge, now I just have to choose the gun.:p

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:
I've voted ".45 ACP", as this caliber serves well for many different purposes.
However, I like many of the more common calibers on the list, too. For me, the final choice depends on specific gun model available.
Yes, the .45 Colt is important, too.
Thanks.

Ditto. It has been much more economical to reload.
9mm is a lot of fun. I haven't started reloading it yet because it is just too cheap. A hair over $10 per 100 at wally world is pretty cheap so I do shoot more 9mm, but love me .45acp.

Tough question. My choice for personal defense would be .40 or .45, plinking .22, for combat 10mm (alongside my FAL and Abrams, of course).
But strictly forthe overall category, I have to give the nod to 9x19. It's not my favorite for any category, but it's more or less good enough for all, and it's CHEAP, which enables a lot of flying lead for plinking, target practice, or clouds of lead against the barbarians.
(Sorry .45 fans, had to do it!)
