What's the difference?

At a gun show recently I was corrected when I called a gun a carbine. I was told it was a short rifle. OK, I'm not a liberal which means I'm a knuckle-dragger:D but what's the difference?

Generally the Carbines were shorter barreled versions of the full sized rifle. They were great for calvary and in tight woods where mobility is limited. If you look at this picture (http://www.fototime.com/DEF60E21D90717C/orig.jpg) , the top gun is a full sized Marlin 30-30, the middle gun is a Winchester '94 Saddle Carbine and the bottom is the traditional bolt action. Notice how much shorter the middle rifle is. That was the advantage of the carbine, but ofcourse, you paid for the mobility with a shorter sight radius and barrel.

Was this an SBR (short barrel rifle)?
If so, there are legal differences in that you need a Tax Stamp for an SBR.
