Should a 16" AR have HBAR?

What is your opinion? What purpose does this serve(other than if on an m16 to stand up to FA heat)? Given a choice, what would you get? Is the ultralight barrel too thin?

I have a Bushy Dissapator that has a 16" heavy barrel. I like the shorter barrel and the long, standard handguards but I dont like the heavy barrel. The rifle is to heavy for what it is and its not near as handy as my AK's or even my SP1. I'd go with the lighter barrel.

A heavy barrel on an AR serves no other purpose than to save the manufacturer money on machining costs.

A 16" pencil barrel weighs about 32oz. A 16" HBAR weighs about 43.2oz.

The HBAR will be stiffer and handle heat better than the pencil barrel, though the difference is slight. The extra 11oz on the muzzle end of the barrel will give it different handling qualities, though in my experience even the HBARs handle well provided the balance is good (heavier stock for example).

It basically comes down to what your personal uses for the rifle will be. You'll have to decide whether slightly more consistent accuracy over long strings of shooting is worth an extra 11oz. That decision will probably depend a lot on whether it is a range gun, one that will be carried frequently or one that will be used on the bench vs. held in a fighting stance all day long at a formal training class.

The differences either way are slight. Go with what suits your perceived needs best.

No advantage to the operator except possibly in FA use, which ain't relevant for most of us.

I've got a 6520 Gov't carbine(carry handle, 1/7 twist, 16" pencil barrel and I bought a 6721 upper ( 16" heavy profile, 1/9" twist and flattop) to use optics.

The 6520 is a joy to carry, but jumps more in rapid fire than the 6721. I really like the muzzle heavy feel and aid in keeping the muzzle down with the heavy Bbl.

I'm sure I'm a little biased as it wears an Eotech 552 as well.

Also, I've shot better groups with the heavy Bbl and attached iron sights than with the light barrel. Both started cold.

I've also got a 16" Bushmaster Dissipator and love it. It doesn't feel too heavy to me.

It also seems amazingly accurate. I don't shoot my rifles very often so I was amazed to be able to hit 1" wide targets routinely at 125 yards with open sights using cheap Wolf ammo.
