What's the most reliable and accurate rifle out of the box in 30-06 or the
300 win. mag.?

Thanks!!

I don't think there's a hard-and-fast answer to that question.

For a low-cost piece, Savage makes a very accurate out-of-the box rifle. The fit and finish might be a little less than other rifles, but they shoot very well.

The Remington has a great reputation for accuracy. The reason I don't own one is the safety. For legal reasons, they modified the safety so it doesn't lock the bolt closed -- and I don't like hunting with a rifle that might not go off because I inadvertantly brushed up against something and lifted the bolt handle!

Weatherby offers an accuracy guarentee, and their rifles are reasonably priced.

Rugers are accurate and have all the bells and whistles -- 3-position safety, claw extractor, hinged magazine floorplate, and so on.

The pre'64 Winchester Model 70 is the standard all other rifles are judged by, and Winchester is making that rifle (slightly modified, and some say even better) again.

Browning has a popular following among the elk hunters I associate with -- they like it in 7mm Remington Magnum.

Me? I have two Model 77 Rugers (the old style, with the shotgun safety), a pre-64 Winchester Model 70. My elk rifle is a custom '03 Springfield in .35 Brown-Whelen (the most radical form of the Whelen.)

What budget? Accuracy International, McMillion, or another custom rifle maker, can make you a world class rifle a at a world class price.

Best value I found and put my money into was a CZ 550.

The CZ 550 Safari Magnum (http://www.cz-usa.com/product.detail.php?id=23) is available in .300 Win Mag and the American, Prestige, and FS are available in .30-06.

For a hunting-weight rifle I don't believe you can beat the accuracy of the Tikkas.

Guaranteed by Tikka to shoot 1-inch or smaller groups at 100 yards. The 3 Tikkas I have all shoot half-inch groups at that range.
