My buddy in 3rd SF group told me he signed for a SR-25 from the unit armorer. Anybody know about the rifle, because I sure don't!

It is manufacturered by KAC. It is essentially an accurized AR-15 chambered for 7.62x51mm. It is used as a sniper rifle by SOF. There are those that love it and those that loathe it.

Try John Carney at http://sr-25.com/ Until recently he carried the entire line of KAC rifles & parts, but evidently there was a parting of the ways. He may still have some in stock, and would be able to give you some info on the specific rifle you're asking about.

It's a cross between a "sniper rifle" and an main battle rifle. Often called a designated marksman rifle. If you will, a medium range precision weapon mostly for urban environments. Longer range work is done typically with a bolt action rifle or a M82A1.
It can be a pain getting match grade ammo through the military system. Typically we just get normal ball ammo. For the M82A1, I got boxes of linked .50 cal ammo intended for the M2.
