What happened to the "assault guns" in California

Forgive my ignorance on this issue.

After the #@$@#$%^ ban on "assault weapons" in California, what did the current owners of legally purchased rifles have to do with them? Did the law say they had to turn them in? Sell out of state? Or were they grandfathered in as long as they stayed permanently with the current owner?

Illinois will probably soon be facing legislation for an Kali-like weapons ban (amongst other things like significant increases in our owner registrations -- FOID card, being forced to get fingerprinted to get a FOID, limits on #s of gun purchases, etc, etc, etc). We have a anti-gun Democratic (redundant) gubnuh, anti-gun Democratic controlled house, anti-gun Democratic controlled senate. Mayor Daley of Chicago swings the big stick and he makes East coast/West Coast gun grabbers look like bush leaguers.

Just wondering if I need to buy that cottage in Wisconsin to house my gun safe.

basically, you had X amount of time to "register" your banned gun. if you didnt didn't, you had better ship the receiver out of state becuase posession of a non registered assault weapon is a felony. I know guys who have been at a range shooting their AR's and clones and LE approached and said "papers please!" (where have we heard that before ?) if you cant produce your reg papers they will hold your gun for you at the station till you can produce them. if you never registered or decided it would be fun to "make" your own gun from parts you collected out of state. i believe its a 10 year felony
luckily M1A is still not on the list ..

M1A WITHOUT flash suppressor is legal. You'd have to take the flash suppressor off to keep it from being registered.

I heard that less than 20% (closer to 10?) actually registered.

I know guys that registered right at the deadline because they didn't know about it and it snuck under them.

Others store their arms out of state.

My two AR's are out of state, and they are NEVER coming back!!

"Officer, they fell in the lake, I know where they are that's why they aren't reported as lost.. I just haven't retrieved them yet.. And so I couldn't read the serial numbers off of them.."

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

But in the end, I decided to ship them out of state.

As a comrade in the Peoples Republic of Illinois my plan is to store guns out of state if I can't escape before bad things happen.:cuss:

When SB 23 passed in 1999, 'assalt weapons' could not be sold be sold after 12/31/1999,the DROS had to be started by this date, also all Hi cap magazines could not be sold after this date. In the People Republic, all assault weapons had to be registered by 12/31/2000, this got be a real hassle as form were at times hard to come by. However AR's and AK's with out pistol grips could be sold in Kailfornia after 12/31/1999, this came to an end in April 2000, when the Criminal General, Bill Lock-U-Up had a court add ALL AR and AK based guns to the banned list, under Robbertti-Roos. If you own in the state any assault type weapon that is not register, you will be charged with a felony.

If you want you state to go down the road we have keep on electing anti-gun idiots to office. The big problem here in Kalifornia was the Democrats (except for 2 in the Assembly) and many so called moderate Republicians voted for SB23. You need to inflict maxximum, political pain on all anti guns, and reward those that support the right to bear arms.

On a final note, Bill Lock-U-Up our Attiurney General , when shown the information tha out of all gun crimes in Kalifornia, assault weapons only account for 1.6% of all firearms used in crimes. The statement right to my face, from Bill Lock-U-Up, was "I know that the reason they shoulld be banned is I don't like them"

Mine are in that same lake. I heard them clatter against something metallic on the way down.

Actually, I sent them out of state ahead of me. It so happened that a good buddy was visiting the summer before and took a few grand worth of guns home for safe keeping.

I've had to buy some guns recently to shoot up the ammo I had stashed for those things. See, unintended consequences.

I suspect in Illinois, that they will ape California, and make AR owners register their rifles. But heck, they already know I own one vis-a-vis my purchase and backround check. So what is the dif? It is wrong of course, but what can you do?

Oh, and of course, I have decided to keep my Mini-14.

became illegal with the passage of SB-23. Luckily, the Air Force saw fit to reassign me to Florida, just before SB-23 went into effect. Sad part was me bringing along over 300 30-round AK mags in my household goods for a friend who couldn't leave the state in time. :(

All mine are registered with laminated papers taped on stocks.Of course I have stash in Oregon incase they move to next step after registration-confiscation. So I put the HK 91-93-94 and others in my Oregon residence vault in case...I just found out today that inserting pre ban high cap mags into post ban guns is nono including pistols.

I read some data after the first year of Kali's registration law. Of an estimated population of some 350,000 "Bad Guns", only about 30,000 were registered. A little food for thought, there.

The problem for gun-owners is self-inflicted. As a group, we don't get involved in politics, nor do we vote our own self-interest. Heck, we even squabble over the merits of the NRA!

Our enemies devote a significant part of their lives to screwing us, because they actually care for their cause more than we do for ours. Don't believe me? Then, why are you griping, if they haven't been successful?
