I've tinkered a bit with it at the gunstore, fit/finish is OK, and the trigger is very interesting...
Please tell me why I shouldn't take it :scrutiny: cuz I just might! :D
Should I avoid it like the plague?

It's an excellent gun. I traded mine only because I moved away from 9mm.
I'm back into 9mm again with 3 SIG's, 2 1911's and a Kahr MK9....can't find a DP51 around here.
It's a great "personal" sized weapon ... like the SIG 239...but without the DA/SA transition.

I notice you've started a few threads like this, "Makarov vs Bersa", "best PPK Clone" and now this, perhaps if you give us some info on what you want out of your purchase?
seems like we're on a hunt for low budget begginner pistols.
best low cost cartridges are 9mm and .22LR so this is a step better than talking about .380s

Nothing at all wrong with the Daewoo! Although not as well known here as some other brands they are rock solid firearms. They are particularly popular and well used in Asia. Look up their net site and learn about them. Good shooting;)

Hi otomik, yes I'm looking for a low-budget beginner pistol, .380ACP or 9mm.
My bro-in-law is telling me is telling me to pass, he says it breaks easily (not first hand experience though). Is there any truth in what he's saying?

Don't know about breaking easy, but I have a DH-40 that broke a trigger spring about 4 years ago, and have yet to find a source for a replacement part. One gunsmith offered to custom make one for me, but at a cost of over half what I paid for the pistol!
I really liked mine -- just wish I could get it firing again! :(

Why would you want to buy an unusual pistol that has no warranty support or ready parts availability?

Because they are cheap to come by, and well made.
Daewoos are fine pistols for the money.

Hey max your website is great! :D
Daewoo precision industries: http://www.dwpi.co.kr
But there's really nothing on their site on the DP51 (they call it K5). Heck the DH380 isn't even listed....

I've been looking for a Daewoo myself - there's a rumor that they're going to be imported again. People say good things about their battle rifle too.

On Daewoo's site, the page about arms seems to be:
http://www.dwpi.co.kr/business/biz_06.html
If you paste this URL into http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr, and specify Korean to English, you'll get a garbled translation.
Anyway it seems clear that they are still in the business, and are still making 9mm and 40 pistols.

Pros
+ Distinctive and Different for a beginning pistol
+ Proven Smith and Wesson design but with improvements and cooler look
Cons
- You better get a real good deal because hidden costs of spare parts or extra magazines for an unusual gun could be considerable. Look for police trade ins and you might find a similar, more common gun for the same price.
You should also search your local pawnshops, they don't know what they have in many cases.

I was under the impression that it takes standard S&W magazines.

there's a rumor that they're going to be imported again.
I've been seeing NIB specimens at the local shows recently, so I suspect this rumor is true.
