What kind of forms are there to fill out in order to purchase a blackpowder firearm, if any? Federal? Michigan? Certain stores?
Thanks in advance.

Avoid Kittery Trading Post in Maine... even though it's perfectly legal and I'll shortly be getting one through mail, they wouldn't sell me a blackpowder pistol because I'm not 21.

There are no federal forms for blackpowder, unless the gun in question is like a T/C Encore. The reciever is identical to the cartridge version and can be converted by the end user. Why blackpowder revolvers don't follow the same restriction I don't know.

Federal law says a BP gun is not a firearm, so no federal forms. Until recently, a BP pistol was still considered a pistol in Michigan and subjected to the same rules as any pistol - this was changed over teh last Winter.
Best deals are usually mail order.
Black Powder is kind of hard to find sometimes - you can mail order that too from Maine Powderhouse.

Call Dixie Gun Works, give them a credit card number, and in about a week or 10 days UPS will deliver your new black powder pistol to your front door. (At least that's the way it worked for me.)

Double-check on those laws in Michigan. I believe that if you shoot a black-powder handgun (as opposed as keeping it as a collectable) you have to register it and get a safety certificate (green card). If so an officer might demand to see it, and if you didn't have one you might be in trouble.

Old Fluff - Until last year your were correct. Thanks to a very Pro-Gun State Rep. this is not longer the case. Just happened this year.

Let's put it this way, I bought and shot BP revolvers in NYC with no forms or other paperwork. I started shooting with BP to find out if I liked shooting before I went thru all the hassle of getting the license and such. I also got one mail-order from Dixie Gun Works delivered to my door in NYC.

There are no Federal laws concerning black powder muzzle loading firearms. However, check your state laws. Here in Kommunist Kalifornia they're considered as "firearms."

Are you sure about that? I bought a Ruger Old Army and T/C Hawken mail order last year. Perhaps they are considered firearms in regards to carry and transport?

Look at California's definition of firearm which reads "any device designed to be used as a weapon, from which is expelled a projectile by the force of any explosion, or other form of combustion..." I didn't see any exemption for black powder muzzle loaders like the Federales grant.link to CA law 12001(a)(1) P.C. (http://caag.state.ca.us.firearms/dwcl/12000.htm)
BTW, CA law doesn't apply to Federal gubmint including the United States Postal Service. :)

Oh, and if you're interested, there are convesion cylinders out there like those made by R&D or my favorite, Kirst I got from River Juntion Suttlers (http://www.riverjunction.com/kirst/index.html) that allow you to shoot .45 Colt out of .44 C&B revolvers or .38s (.38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38 Special) out of the .36 caliber revolvers. Since they are classified as a part by the BATF, there is no liscensing on them or federeal 4473 forums to fill out. Keep in mind though that you still have to keep your ammunition loaded to BP pressure levels either with BP, a BP substitute or CAS loaded smokeless ammo though. I've used my Remington conversions for a lot of SASS shoots and I really like them. Shoot great, easier to deal with than loose powder and they have a LOT of style points to boot. :D
