to a question that was never asked. You'd be FAR better off with a Glock or Sig".
That was a conversation i just overheard at a local shop between a guy who was looking for his first handgun and a guy behind the counter.I'm not a huge 1911 fan (i do own one) but blanket statements like that really annoy me!:banghead:

I'm a huge 1911 fan, but I'm not going to make a blanket statement that 1911's are the best handgun for every situation or person, because they aren't. People who shoot off their mouths trying to impress others really irk me.

Apparently the speaker lacks both the capability for original thought and the knowledge of the history of the 1911.
His quote is a knock-off of Jeff Cooper's. It's Cooper's opinion of DA auto's, IIRC; he has just reversed the meaning.
And yes, the question for which the 1911 was the answer was asked, by the Army, in great detail, about 100 years ago. JMB and others spent a great deal of time proposing answers. The Army decided that the 1911 was the best answer.

And Coopers quote is a knock-off of Leo Tolstoy's "Historians are like deaf people who go on answering questions that no one has asked them."
As noted it's kind of a fall back line that can be twisted to about anything. My favorite for when I'm getting clobbered in a debate is "If you've already made up your mind I won't confuse you with the facts". ;)

The 1911 was the answer to a question that WAS asked! The Army wanted a manstopper because thier .38s weren't very effective. JMB answered the problem with the 1911 and the .45ACP.
It still answers the question today!
Damn I love my 1911!!
