It's almost easier to do than to describe- but not the first or second time you get into it. The first look at all those giblets is kind of scary.

Wrong order. Always loosen the strain screw first before removing the side plate. The reason is that with the sideplate off, the pins are not supported on that side, so it is a good idea to relieve at least the hammer pin strain before removing the support. Reverse on reassembly. Put light strain on the mainspring to keep it in place, but do not fully tighten the strain screw until the sideplate is in place.

Just a note that on the newest S/W's (at least my 66-6), The main spring pivot is detachable from the hammer, and the trigger return pawl comes out very easily from the trigger.
No biggie to get either back in place, just a heads up especially on the pivot if your taping the sideplate off and hear a "tink" on the floor. I had a momentary panic this afternoon thinking "Ehhh.. whats that thing and is it hard to get back wherever it's supposed to go???";)

Interesting. My 617 is a few years old and is pretty much like the mod 17 above except for some MIM parts. Not surprised that there are some variations. I have no idea what the new safety lock even looks like from the inside.

I've seen the locks in both my 642 and 66-6 now. Really didn't pay much attention though. The ones on mine don't affect dissassembly to the point I needed (bit of action polishing) so didn't mess with them.
One tiny change I noted was that on older guns had to pull cylinder relase back to work action when partially disassembled. On 66-6 release stays back on it's own.
I'm not all that mechanical and worst part of the whole deal was trying to figure out how to get the Houge Bantam grips off:o
PS,
One tip I got from a trainer was to fill the charge holes with used cases to support the star while unscrewing the ejector rod.

That last is just about necessary revolvers that don't have locator pins for the star. The cylinder latch staying back would be a real convenience.

Well Done ! Thank you !!
Hey moderators- What do you think about Floating this and the Ruger Disassembly Thread / Pics? Putting in THR Library along with March's Revolver Checkout thread?
Looks like we need one on Colt Revolvers doesn't it ? :D :D

Mec, do you still have the photos around for this thread? It'd be nice to run through it again.
Thanks!

May not be what you're looking for, but here's one I wrote up a while back. After popping the trigger and rebound slide out, everything else is gravy.
replacing rebound springs. (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=33&t=57186)

I found these still in the high road data base but they seem to have fallen out of t his particular post at last TWICE. I do NOT know how long they will be up this time.
be advised that an internet expert has said that the strain screw should be loosened before bouncing the sideplate.
