S&W model 60

Depends on how old the gun is. It's probably more than I'd be willing to pay for J-frame .38 though.

not sure...doesn't sound too terrible though...

...have you priced them on Bud's or Gunbroker?

Okay, I know which one you mean now. My old man has a Model 60 snubby .38 so that's what I always see in my head when someone mentions one.

A .357 in a J-frame isn't something I'd be excited to shoot. I want a little heftier frame. But still, for that price I'd rather have an older, bigger frame S&W revolver.

My wife bought my new 3" 60 from our local pusher last month for $640 + s/t - inc putting it on plastic.

Yeah - it's a '60 Pro', SKU #178013, came with those nifty '60 Pro' grips - which I had already put on my new 3" 63 (And, last week, a set went on my 5" 63 - great grips for $43 from S&W!). A H3 front 'night sight', too - not a plus here - I like HiViz. It must have had a modicum of a trigger job - it's smoother than any new 60 - or J-frame .38/.357M in general, that I have ever tried. Nice little .38/.357M - it just needs a HiViz - I'm still looking!

That shop offered it to me for $649 + s/t cash... my wife marches over, while I am drooling elsewhere in the shop, and said, "Give me that girley-man little gun (She thinks the script '60 Pro' isn't right... I don't care.) he wants and bring the box... I'll need a better deal, too!". It worked. She is a keeper - buys my BM knives cheaper, too. As we left, I quipped, "We could have gotten a $50 rebate last week!". "What doo you care... it was my money!". Keeper. Seriously, you'd be shocked how little difference there is in a selling price for the most basic 60 and a 60 Pro - something to consider, if you can.

Stainz, I also want to get the grips from the pro series for my regular 3" 60. I cannot find them on the smith website, where did you look?
To the OP, that price seems about average although you didnt say if it was a 3", 2/18" or 1 7/8" barrel. Belive it or not it makes a difference because the 3" usually has adjustable sights

no, its a j frame

i just bought the same gun, 60-15 with a 3"bbl for $500...in November...

It needed new sights and a set of springs, I don't recall exactly how much that all cost me but it wasn't that much - so the sights and some flitz to shine it up its like new.

I'm as pleased as I can be.

Bud's lists the standard Model 60-15 at $601.00, so that $617.00 is a good deal. S&W suggested retail is $759.00.

I paid $699.00 for mine (serves me right for buying at Gander Mountain) and added the Pro grips. I also added the Pro grips to my Model 637, making a big difference in handling for just a half-inch extra height.

If you want the Pro grips, just call Smith & Wesson Customer Service. That's what I did.

The most recent shipping list had the 60 Pro replacement part number as 41174 0000, while I had them as 41147 0000 - ~$43. Call S&W @ 1-800-337-0852 and get Customer service (#2905). That grip is not on their site. It fits the RB J-frame only.

Hey Stainz My Friend-

I have a stainless steel 3" barrel, .38 Special with adjustable target sights and semi-target hammer and trigger; known as the Smith & Wesson model 60-4. Sorry no pic, but it wears a beautiful set of S&W [round butt] carved grips. I picked it out of what was believed to be a mob boss's collection, out of the Chicago area for $300~! ;) :D

I went and looked at it again and held it this time? The gun looks like it has never been touched they say its new. Are there still model 60s around that are brand new are any other discontinued models that can still be found new?

chaddy, there are all kinds and styles of the model 60 out there, mostly great discontinued kinds. Don't be wed to the brand new ones, they cost more and you have to "break 'em in."

TexasBill and/or Stainz, are the Pro 60 grips comfortable with magnum loads? I would think the checkering would sting a little.

The 3 in model 60 in .357 are hard to find, but used ones are out there. It depends if you want new or used. For a new gun that's not a bad deal. Used would go from 400.00 to 550.00 around here. The problem is trying to find a used one anywhere that is affordable.

I've tried the Hogue grips that came with the gun and a set of Pachmyrs but I like the way the 60 Pro grips feel. I can get a really good, firm grip with the wood, which helps. I haven't encountered any problems with the checkering.

That being said, the Model 60 with Magnum loads is a handful so most of my shooting is with .38 Special or .38 Special +P. Maybe I am just a wimp, but a few cylinders of .357 Magnum is about all I want to shoot on a given day. I remember one range trip where I told myself I was going to put a box of factory Magnums through the gun, come hell or high water. I did, but I wasn't very happy afterwards.

I love those grips, but can't find them on the S&W site, do they make them for K frames?

I have 3 of the model 60's and do like them. one is a 2" no dash, then I have the 2" 357 with crimson trace grips and just picked up about two weeks ago a 60-4. its the one from the early 90's in 3" with the AS, TT, TH. nice revolvers.

Those grips are from the current '60 Pro' model - a RB J-frame. They aren't on the S&W site, but are available for $43 + s/t + s/h as # 41174 0000 only from S&W Accessories (1-800-331-0852). You might check out the '686 SSR' for 'different' wood grips for a RB K/L frame.

I've got one I paid $290 for new..........but that was in about 1999. I like it a lot. Not sure but I THINK it's a 60-10.
After shooting +Ps thru a 642, .357s in the Model 60 are no problem. It handles recoil well for a small framed gun but I mostly shoot +P .38s thru it.

Got one years ago for Mrs Rembrandt, around $300 at the time. Grips came from Smith & Wesson Performance Center......rose pattern was her pick, not real manly but I like packing it from time to time.

Bought mine (60-15) 3" about a year and a half ago. Just over &600.00. Great revolver. With .357's you know you've got a handful but manageable.

Ala Dan,

You find the good ones - congratulations again, my friend! That's neat - what a history for your 60. I missed out on both a 60 and an SP101 in .38 Special, early models, because they were 'old'. Okay, my wallet had moths in it. They were both in VG+ condition - and both sold for <$250 each - within the last six years. Kicking one's self gets old after a while... It's best to be prepared - and always have 'mad money'...

Price might be a little high -- but not by much for one in very good condition.
It its what you really want, then you should be happy with it.

I handload .357 to .38 +P velocities.

Very shootable.

Bought the .357 because, except for the little too much recoil issue of .357, it had all the upgrade features I always wanted on my old Chief's Special.
