So, a friend of mine recently purchased an AK. We went to the range, what a blast. Needless to say, someones got the bug now. Trouble is, I am way more knowledgeable on the subject of pistols than long guns. I guess I'm just asking for basic info on the platform, brands to lean towards, brands to shy away from, internals (I thought I've heard they can be beefed up). What would you guys/gals get if you were in the market? Help me out folks, thanks.

Well im no expurt but i have a wasr 10/63 wich can be had for around 400. a lot of people will tell you they are crapy but mine is preaty great. thats starting at the low end.

You can work up to a nice polish or hungarian sa-85 (550-650+). then there are the mak 90 / norinco aks(700-800) moveing up to the arsenals (750+) and finaly the hard to find verps(1000-1200+)

I have read that the verps are great , they have a more heavy duty reciever and beter barrel. But they shure are pricy. My advice to you if you want to look at the wasr 10/63 is to handle it before you buy it and fire it if you can. You want to check for bad mag wobble, canted front sight and canted gas tube.If the rifle seems straight then it probly is.

A lot of the price diff with aks is in the fit and finish. if you want it look realy great and shoot well go more $$$$ If you dont care so much about looks but you want i to shoot well a wasr will be fine.Dont forget that aks come in 7.62x39,233 and 5.45x39

I like the orig 7.62x39 but the 5.45x39 russian surp can be found for almost half the price. Happy hunting!

Which aren't Polish or Hungarian. .

The majority of non-WASR AKs sold today are predominantly produced with American-made core components (barrel and receiver).

If slapping a Porsche tailfin on a Buick makes the Buick a Porsche, I guess we can continue calling CAI built rifles "Hungarians" and "Polish"

I was not talking about new production guns only. there are polish and hungarian aks to be had that are not on a crapy reciever and they have good barrels. But like i sed im no expert.......
