EAA Witness P Full Size 9mm 4.5" Polymer Question

Greetings everyone!

I just ordered an EAA Witness P Full Size 9mm 4.5" Polymer 16+1 from Buds. I like the way the gun feels and I definitely liked the price. It will be a range gun for me.

I'd like to replace the recoil spring to help avoid the dreaded "cracked slide", but I don't know which size to choose. I will only be shooting light to standard loads, nothing hot. I was thinking a 16# replacement Wolf recoil spring. Does that sound about right? Are there any other mods you might consider?

You have the plastic gun and a 9mm. You wont hurt it a bit with anything you shoot. Just enjoy it as-is.
 
If memory serves, the cracked slides were predominantly .45 and 10mm. As poster above has said, the 9mm will serve you well. Had that same gun, very accurate. You will be pleased.
 
Cracked slides were 10mm and some 45's, only in round configuration from excessively hard slides. There weren't that many that cracked, but enough to get spread about. That is not to minimize the problem that happened, but EAA replaced the slides every time.
 
I believe the few cracked slides that have occurred were with the Wonder finish too, not the blued like your gun. I got the same gun form Impact in March. I like it a lot. Feels great in the hand, better than the full size frame on my 45 P Carry, and is accurate and reliable.
 
9mm

In 9mm really, you have nothing to worry about. In my opinion , these are really good pistols. They feel great in the hand and point even better. SA is damn near perfect, DA...a little heavy. However after 1000-1500 it will smooth out.

Range time with new Witness P!

Just a quick note to say, you guys were really right on the money. My Witness ate everything I fed her with good accuracy. POI was right on at 10 yards.

I'll agree that there's nothing to worry about with the 9mm model, or with most EAAs, for that matter.

But, the claim that EAA replaced all busted slides (for the .45s or 10mm guns) is not supported by recent personal statements on this forum, and on The Firing Line (another well-regarded forum). EAA's customer service reputation has been terrible for years.

I've heard that EAA customer service has improved over the past year or so, apparently because the person who was causing the problems (a family member and part owner of EAA -- a family-owned business) has new responsibilities...

Meanmrmustard...You bet I did!

As I said above, I received my Witness yesterday and took her out for her first range visit today. I was really pleased. It's full size poly frame with steel slide felt good in my hand and was easy, easy, easy to point. Point of aim and poi were right on the $ at 10 yards. I didn't have too much time to shoot (I was teaching my aunt how to safely shoot a handgun today), but I was able to shoot 20-30 Federal FMJ and about the same # of cast round nose reloads I had on hand. Both fed and functioned flawlessly!

The Witness won't replace my .357 Dan Wesson for 25 yard Bullseye style shooting, but for shooting steel where solid accuracy and fast sight acquisition are a must, the Witness P really fits the bill! Oh yeah.... I almost forgot.... it's a blast to shoot!

The only negative I have found so far is the trigger. The edges seemed a little too sharp and weren't the most comfortable when shooting double action. When shooting single action it felt fine. Also I would have liked the trigger pull to be a bit smoother. Not bad, but could be better. I have the idea that after 400-500 rounds through her, the trigger pull will be much smoother.

Next time I'm at the range I'll shoot some serious targets to see how well I can do with her. I'll try to post some pictures when I do.

I had the same experience with an CZ 85 Combat. A lot of masking tape, to protect the finish of the frame and trigger guard, and a Dremel -- or a judiciously applied file and/or sandpaper -- will quickly round those sharp edges.

I hear that complaint about a log of guns, and a surprising number of folks do nothing about it, but complain. You may have to recolor the trigger (cold blue) or buff the whole thing, depending on how it looks.
 
I'm actually pretty well-pleased to hear that EAA's customer service has improved. I din't have that great an experience with my 45P when the trigger pin began working its way out several years ago. They import a few Tanfoglio's I'd really like to get my hands on, especially a Stock II.
