Ok I picked up a very beat up 1941 XIX sporterized Carcano today and the dealer had some VERY old hand-loaded ammo for it. I'm talking like 50 year old stuff. I do not have a stripper clip for the thing unfortunately and took it to the range and fired five rounds. Well, two actually, three did not fire though not to my surprise. Since buying new and even reloading 6.5 Carcano is expensive, I was wondering if there were any rifle inserts out there for say maybe .32 ACP or something more common and cheap? I just want to be able to shoot it to put holes through paper. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.

There really aren't any options besides reloading, or buying factory ammo. Brass is available, but finding the correct diameter bullets can be hard. Hornady makes them, a .268 160gr RNSP. I have found that it is a finicky cartridge to load for, and pressure spikes fast when working up a load. Definitely start at the published minimum and work up slowly.
Prvi Partisan makes reasonably priced ammo in 6.5x52, and has good quality reloadable brass.
Also, don't drop a round in the chamber and try to close the bolt on it. They were only meant to feed from the magazine, and the extractor will break.

Look for seller gcole on gunbroker, he keeps the ppu stuff in stock and is reasonable.

The closest thing I have seen (maybe on this board) was a 6.5 Carcano rechambered to shoot 7.62x39. Not a sleeve and I don't imagine it was cheap. Probably a lot of fun though. I have seen Privi ammunition for sale at prices comparible to other center fire ammunition. Supposedly it is better than more expensive Norma but I haven't tried it.

Norma, on the rare occasion you can find it, is a freaking ripoff. Their prices are insanely high. Their name doesn't even deserve mentioning in any ammunition discussion. There's a reason nobody carries the stuff.

Find some old military ammo in the box; They came in a pack of 18 rounds on 3 clips. The clips are reusable (for a long time, if you're gentle with them).
I don't remember what I paid, and it was a few years ago, but no more than maybe $15/box. Both 6.5 and 7.35 in the pic, with my 91/38 carbine (I have 4 Carcano rifles). I bought probably 15 boxes, haven't needed any more since. The ammo usually shoots fine, too.

I have a Carcano in 7.62x39, but that was done by yanking the barrel out and replacing it with a rechambered Mosin-Nagant barrel. It was pretty cheap to do, but not an option for a rifle that hasn't already been hacked up by Bubba. You won't find any chamber inserts for the Carcano because there aren't any cheap rounds that use the 6.5mm or 7.35mm bore.
