Smith&Wesson Model 19 200 year LAPD

A friend owns a S&W model 19 .357. It's NEW in the Presentation Case.
1781-1981 200 year anniversary Los Angeles Police Dept. gun with 1,981 made. Ordered and paid for in 1980, delivered in 1981. He wants to know what they are worth today. Thanks for any info.
 
The commemorative is a double-edged sword, some like, some don't. I paid $550 for a flawless, unfired 19 with box, tool, manual etc. So, $550.

Those presentation models are rough to judge. Very nice guns usually, because they were usually stored and not shot. However if you are not a member of the demographic they were created for they are not more valuable (and often less) than any other similar unmarked model.
I mean, what does a guy in Indiana care about an LAPD commemorative gun?

Smith made special edition models for whomever wanted to pay for them. There's a large number of various commemoratives out there so unless you specifically collect commemoratives it's not special.

$600 would be about right, imho. And me personally wouldn't really want it. I'd rather a 90% condition no-dash shooter. Price less and usable.

Very true. My LGS had an drop-dead gorgeous 28-2 WA State Patrol commemorative in the even prettier presentation case. It was unfired but they wanted $1200 for it if memory serves. Not even I am mad enough to pay that for a model 28, someone did though, it's gone from the store. Now, if I could have my money back from all the speeding tickets they wrote me back when I was much younger then maybe, maybe :)

Most law enforcement agencies are in favor of gun control, what makes the LAPD special? Do they get a sneer because they're in California?

Well, it looks like the people here think it's worth about $600. I tell him the bad news. He paid $900 without asking me first, and now is asking $1,200. Maybe living in Anaheim, Orange county, we can find a LAPD cop who just can't live without it. Ya, right. Today I found a Smith&Wesson Knife...1781-1981 LAPD 200 year commemorative. New in the box. It's for sale...I'll tell my friend to buy it and sell them together. Thanks for the info guys. Craig
