50mm Nikon mounting

Greetings,

There is something I do not understand very well.
I want to mount my 50mm Nikon 30mm tubed scope on my lmt308.
I have no issue to mount scopes on bolt actions: as low as I can.:)
On my ar-15, i mounted an ACOG. Easy as pie.

I keep reading about 20 degrees mounts with rings.
Why would I want to do that and will those mounts work with a flat top and 50mm objective?
Anyone can point me on something that will work, so I do not have to proceed with trial and errors?

The bases you read about with 20 MOA built in are for shooting at 1000 yards. It allows you to have more elevation adjustment by angleing the scope down in the front.

With an AR type rifle high is good. Since the top of the scope is higher than the bore you have to mount the scope higher. I ended up useing the Burris P.E.P.R. one piece mount on my AR. There are several brands to choose from that are made specificly for AR type rifles.

A 50mm objective will clear the handguard with room to spare with any of these.

The 20moa mounts keep the scope from running out of adjustment at long ranges.
With a 223, if you're shooting under 600 yards or so, no need.

KCShooter took the words right out of my mouth. Those rings are for really long rang. You probably don't need them.
 
As long as you have the adjustment range attain a proper zero there is no good reason not to use a tapered mount (be it 20MOA or greater), it will give you more adjustment range for long range target use. FWIW I use a 40MOA mount (in addition to 96MOA internal) on my primary LR precision rifle...will I ever need it, I seriously doubt it, but there's no good reason not to have it just in case I find a range long enough to accommodate it.

As far as the mounting, I would be very surprised if the taper will make enough difference to require a taller mount/ring, but we need to know the model of your scope before making any sort of recommendation.

Most modern scopes have sufficient internal adjustments to reach out to 1k yds. The 20 moa raisers are used to keep the scopes elevation setting closer to center, so it well have it's full windage travel available. If the scope elevation is dialed down to it's maximum internal travel it is limited on it's windage travel.
 
My scope is a Nikon Monarch X with the 50mm lense. It is a 30mm tube.
 
Being a side focus scope, you won't need to go as high as an AO. I would go with either a standard height American Defense Ad-Recon 20 MOA (30mm version) or LaRue LT112 (with 30mm rings). They're both costly, but they're both good, stable mounts that you'll not have to worry about. Either should fit the scope you mention fine and mount fairly low.
