I'm looking at getting A new bolt gun in .308 WIN and am looking for some REAL personal experience. I don't want this to turn into an arguement or the buy a $3000 or $4000 bolt gun thread. These 4 bolt actions are in my trade allowance and I will get some extra's as in scope, bipod, and even some ammo. What am I trading you ask? My Ruger SR-556. I don't need it (it is a back-up to a back-up to a back-up) and it has few rounds through it (around 60).

Here are the contenders, in .308 WIN and no particular order. I jumbled them on purpose so that my own preference can't get in the way:

1. Remington SPS Tactical AAC-SD

2. Savage Model 10 FP-SR

3. Reminton SPS Tactical

4. Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine

5. If you haven't noticed I am looking for a shorter and heavy barreled tactical-ish bolt action. If you have a suggestion for a similar rifle in the same price range, please back it up with personal experience. I'm not looking for hearsay. I want personal feedback from those that have used these systems.

I've had the SPS Tactical and one of the Savage 10 FP models. Both were good guns. I'd grab one of the Remingtons for the aftermarket support. I also had a 700 LTR that was better than both by a good margin.
 
All 4 are nice rifles, but I am NOT a Remington fan. I do own one but it is a collectors item not a shooting rifle. For those I have three Savages.

Which one will be a personal choice, me I like the 10 FP-SR, you may like something else. Any of the four would work for you.

I have a Savage 10 PC. I don't have many round through it (40) but I like it. It's comfortable and the weight really isn't that bad considering the barrel is stout. I love the AccuTrigger. I kinda wish I would have got the .223 version tho, it was my first .308 and I'm just not sure if I like it. Can't shoot it all day like a .223.

If I was close I'd trade you straight up for it...
 
The Remington 700 LTR Rifle

Add the Remington 700 LTR rifle in .308 to your list. I bought mine used for $600. After I bedded it, it shot like a top. Ive seen a few on back page in the same price range, If you can find an older one with the old trigger you should be more than happy.
 
I used to own one of the FN Patrol rifles. It was a tack driver and in my opinion far more ruggedly built than any of your choices. I sold it because I'm more of a hunter. At over 10 lbs scoped it never got used anywhere but at the range. I have 5 lb rifles that shot pretty close and were the ones I actually used.

If I were into that type of shooting more, I'd buy another FN in a heartbeat. Have a friend that is a pretty serious benchrest shooter that uses a Remington 5R. He shoots it pretty well.

I've had a stainless Ruger compact in 308 for a couple of years. Some of the internals are not very slickly finished, but it is 100% functional. Accuracy is really good-better than I expected from a short, very lightweight & slim barrel. It is also quite light, short and handy to get around.

I've taken at least 3 deer with it and like it very much.
 
The Remington 700 AAC has "Tactical Threading." It's gotta be better.....
 
Have you considered a Enfield 2A or 2A1, not terribly expensive, & they shoot great. .308 ammo easy to find, 12 rd mag. cap. & they make great builds. I have just over a 100 bucks in this one.........

I have 10 Savages in diffrent calbers some are doubled in calbers. They all shot from 1/2in groops and some shot 3/4 groops at 100 yards.
 
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of current production Remingtons. I guess a big part of that may be the way they screwed up Marlin when they took over productions to take that for what its worth. I am a big fan of Savage rifles, however. Great out of box accuracy and bang for the buck. Of the two Savages, I like the Model 10 Precision Carbine better, unless you intend to attach a silencer or muzzle brake.
 
I bought a Remington SPS Varmint in .308 as a long-range project gun this summer. So far it is an extremely accurate rifle, and I am more than pleased with it. I personally didn't want a 20"barrel, which is why I bought the "varmint" model. Hopefully soon I will get the barrel cut down to 24".

Really cant go wrong with your choices they all are capable rifles. In factory rifles ther isnt one that's head and shoulders above another brand.

I have a few 308's and a $350 Rem 700SPS was the most trouble free shooter out of the lot. It came out of the box shooting 1/2 moa bone stock. The others I had to find loads for and the Savages were a PIA to find a load, very finicky.

I've had a Savage 10fp and a Remington 700 SPS tactical. Both were good guns. The Savage shot better out of the box then the Remington. Once I put a B&C stock on the 700 and had the trigger done it outshot the Savage.

Take your pick.
 
Ruger Gunsite Scout, it's probably a little over the trade in range, but the M77 action is my favorite, and the ten round capacity is a bonus.
 
I voted for the Savage 10 FP SR to me it is everything I want in this type of rifle,
to one exception, I like detachable magazines.
 
Wow, the Savage Model 10 FP-SR is winning at this point? I thought for sure the one of the Remingtons would be way ahead? I would love to have a FN but they are out of my price/trade in range. The most accurate rifles I've had were an old (I really mean old) Savage in .223 Rem, a FN FNAR, and a old Stevens Buckhorn .22lr. My pops is a Remington man through and through. I have alot of good memories out hunting in the country with my dad and his old 700's. As far as reliability I've never seen a bolt gun that was unreliable concerning function. That is why Remington and Savage are my two pics as far as companies.

The prices are right and the after-market support is great for both. This will be a pain to pick one but that is why you guys were asked for your experience, it will lead me in the right direction and my pick will be because you guys helped me out. Thank you all.
