Rossi 92 rust. Should I worry?

Seal the wood.

Clean the rust off the metal with 0000 Super-Fine steel wool & oil.

Then get a small can or tube of R.I.G. Rust Inhibitor Grease.

It beats CLP by light years in those places the sun don't shine.
It is simply the best long term rust protection I know of.

I have used it to wipe down and maintain an extensive gun collection for about 45 years and have never had a trace of rust on anything.

Fluid Film will stay with you for years as well. CLP will evaporate in what seems like no time.

I actually just finished doing the same thing.
Just get a bottle of Birchwood Casey Stock Sealer and Filler - should be available at Walmart or Cabellas - if not online.
RIG grease is good stuff like they said.

While you have it apart, you might want to take the mag plug out and remove the mag spring and bullet follower and check the INSIDE of the mag tube. They are very prone to rust and crud buildup in there also.

I was actually going to buy some RIG today, but passed because I have some machine grease. Would that work as a rust inhibitor on pitting?

This rust is stupid. It's like the more I steel wool it off the more I find in other spots. Why Rossi would do this is beyond me, especially after people have complained about it. I love the gun but using that kind of wood or stain that causes rust is stupid.

Advice from a retired furniture maker: Tung Oil "Finish" is not very resistant to moisture. Pure tung oil is more so, but the "finish" is a mixture of some tung oil and a lot of varnish. NOTHING (on wood) is more resistant to moisture than paraffin wax, as verified by government testing. My advice: use Minwax rub-on oil finish (it really penetrates), followed by rubbed-on paraffin wax on your wood, if you are paranoid about moisture from the wood getting at the metal parts, or in keeping moisture from the environment from entering the wood.
