Deer in the hog trap

Went to check my hog trap this morning and there was a buck in it. :what: Never caught a deer before. I woulda ridden back (was on my KLR Kawasaki) and got my camera, but he was going nuts in there bangin' the wire and trying to bite it causing his mouth to bleed. So, I got the rope out of a saddle bag and strung it though the wire, all the while trying to keep from being gored, and stood back and opened the door. He ran off nearly tripping over the fence as he hopped it. He had one antler missing, wasn't around the trap, but this time of the year they're shedding and his head didn't look damaged, figure it just naturally fell off somewhere. His one antler sported 3 points.

In 8 years a deer has never gotten in my trap. Anyone ever have this happen? He seemed alright. Maybe he'll be back at my feeder in a couple of years with 12 points on his head or something. :)
 
I read something about putting some diesel on the corn. Deer hate the smell of it. Hogs don't care and will still go in and eat.

Yeah, I've heard the diesel thing. If this becomes a problem, I might have to pick up some diesel.

We just bought this place and moved in. I went down to my place in Calhoun County and got my trap the other weekend and have had it out there about a week. I don't know, maybe the deer are dumber here. We'll see.
 
It does not take much from what I read. Cheap insurance to keep deer out of your trap. I think it also keeps possum, racoon, and other by catch out.

i,ve never caught a deer in a hog trap. A friend has caught several deer. His traps are 6' tall. He cut the tops off his traps and they still hold the hogs.

i don't put diesel on corn.

Betting you won't see that buck in a trap again, he just got an education. Glad you and the deer weren't injured.
 
Deer and hogs like the same feed. That is why I taint my feed corn for hogs with diesel. You do not want to saturate the corn. Just enough to give it a smell. It will wash off during rain.
 
Well, I'll be danged if that stupid buck wasn't back in my trap this morning. :rolleyes::banghead: He got his leg tangled in the trip wire for the door this time and I had to open the door while grabbing his leg and unwrapping the wire from it. His leg was pretty skinned up. I just left the door shut on the thing. It's sprinkling out, anyway, and I don't wanna mess with it until I get me a small can and some diesel to keep the stupid deer out. I have two feeders going on the place and that idiot deer goes in the trap after the corn in there. :cuss: I think they have low IQs up here or something.
 
Were it season, I'd be tempted to oblige him. LOL But, I think if he's not so dumb as to get himself shot in the next couple of years, he might turn out to be a nice buck. He's young, maybe first year antlers.

Anyway, if he's dumb enough to come to my trap, he's dumb enough to come to my feeder next season..:D
 
I've had similar problems. I tried securing a piece of fence wire across the trap opening about five inches from the top in hopes that the deer would hit it and back out. So far that hasn't worked. I think my next move will be to tie a second wire further inside the cage and see if that helps. Releasing deer from a box trap is truly a pain, they tend to go wild. I've had to really stake the trap down securely to prevent them from turning it over. That happened the first time one got caught, and it threw the trap over as well as the feeder I had placed over the trap!

Yep been there done the deer in the hog trap thing as well. My good friend got so tired of it he simply got rid of his traps. Seemed we were catching more deer than hogs, and it was quite a nightmare constantly getting them out. Some were fine others made it out but we knew they were probably stressed beyond recovery, but ya got to leave them be.

Also had them roll the traps as well, that is REALLY a pain when you come up on them and they go crazy and roll it right then, the fight is on from then on out. Luckily MOST bucks we found were young bucks with small antlers or does. It don't matter though either one will put the hurt on you REAL quick. We did however have one young 10 point in one of them that was a mess, but thankfully he made it through the year.

Good luck with yours and I think your right, is does seem that deer in some areas are simply dumber than in other areas for sure.

Obviously I was wrong Mc as the deer just might be dumber down there.
 
I have had the exact same thing happen with a buck repeatedly in the hog trap.
I suspect that deer are not as smart as we give them credit for being. Very wary- yes, but smart-no.

When I started deer hunting in earnest, I went through great pains to avoid walking in on trails, setting up 2 and 3 stands for one spot for the wind, hunting dense thickets and places where no one else did. I was not very successful until a friend told me, "You give these deer too much credit, just hunt them where you have seen them or where there's lots of sign." I took his advice and my success rate shot up dramatically. I only pay attention to the wind now and it has worked out well.
 
Well, it's just a matter of time. I have it set, again, no deer so far. But, these tasty little morsels are showing up at my feeder which is about 40 yards from the trap.

Neighbor came by couple of days ago to meet us. We were in the back yard building a metal building. He owns 17 acres and shares a fence with me. He's lives in Houston and has several properties. He told me he'd watch my place when here if we were gone and asked me to keep an eye on his. Said I could roam the place and hunt squirrel over there which increases my squirrel huntin' acreage.

I walked around out there today with a .22 rifle after checking my trap. Saw lots of dove, today. Hopefully, dove season will be good. :D He's got one of those big tripod feeders set up with a solar panel and a HUGE hog trap must be 6 feet high. I don't know if deer could jump that, no top on it, though. It's not set, probably runs it only when he's here, I'm sure. Lots of wallows in those woods, though, hog sign everywhere.

Yep, just a matter of time and I'll be butcherin' pork from this place. :D
 
I picked up 2 dozen snares for the grandkids and me to put out a few at a time. I figured that once they see how to set them up it will only be a couple of weeks before they irritate their mom into hauling them over to the place to set a couple out.

I'm hoping to put some fresh pork in both our freezers this weekend. Figured that we would run a half dozen, and keep the rest as spares or I might haul a few over to a friends place to use while I'm over there.

I like hunting them on foot the best, but once they start coming after around 9:00 at night I get pretty lazy about going after them. The snares will be like running the trot line only we don't ahve to worry about the turtles eating the bait off the hooks. Luckily the way they are running our place the deer aren't going nowhere within 50yds of their trials. Plenty of set up places coming and leaving the feeders in the thick stuff.

The other reason I want some is to teach the oldest how to dress his own critters instead of just holding a leg for me and watching. He's 11 now and high time to learn.
 
Yep, my grandpa showed me one time how to gut and butcher a deer, after that, I was on my own. :D Snares sound effective. I've got just the spots on my other place. It's ate up with hogs and there's two spots there that they come out of a mot of oaks., thick in there. There's also a new highway I found through a smaller mot out there. I'm a hundred miles from there, though, now. In the winter, I put my trailer down at Port O'Connor and hunt down there a few days at a time when I'm not hunting ducks down on the Guadalupe. Gonna be a busy hunt season next year, but I'm ready for it, well, almost. I need to build a box blind and buy another feeder for the other place, maybe another tripod. My tripod stands are in pretty sad shape.

If you can get a pic of one of your snare sets, I'd like to see that, give me an idea what gauge the wire and all that. Maybe a little tutorial in a post. :D
