The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

The barrel is that of a 45 Colt Blackhawk. The grooves are .452", but it's the chambers that make this size debatable. My chambers measure ~.453-.454" and so these may very well move under recoil. At worst you may get a chain fire.

But there are some guys who seem to make these work well.

A fellow had sent me some of his 200 grn SWC bullets, which didn't work well, but I turned them backwards, as I've read of a few guys doing, and used them as WC's, which worked fairly well. I'm wondering if some were just oversized or if it may have been due to dirty chambers as I had been firing a bunch of bullets, though I use Triple 7 and don't see much fouling...

Howdy all y'all. I finally scored a fair to middlin ROA off one o the auction sites. Seeing the prices folks are charging I think I got a good deal at $368.00 including shipping.

She seems to be mechanically sweet although with some honest age appropriate for a 1978 era revolver.
IMG_6424_zpse95171f8.jpg
Unfortunately I seem to have gotten the ugliest set of Italian copy ORANGE grips ever.
That's ok though as I don't like the grip frame size anyway. I don't much care for the little bitty ,pinky droppin Colt Navy sized handle. I much prefer the Army length
IMG_6426_zpsbe8eb413.jpg
I have been searching far and wide for an old style Super Blackhawk frame to no avail. I will, however, adapt and overcome. Note the background wood bits in the pics. I plan on carvin myself out a longer set o grips similar to TALLBALD'S back on page 3.

Nice gun. You could prolly use super blackhawk grips and add a piece of walnut to the bottom making a one piece grip like a 1860 colt. You would have to remove the locator pin in your grip frame and use two screws to hold the grips on. I do have a set of Ajax faux ivory grips that would look better than what you have and also have a pair of the ruger medalions that you could use on the ivory onesor on a set you make if you want to go that route.

Thanks kituwa. I am a pretty fair woodworker so I will be building a new set of grips from scratch. I would be interested in the Ruger medallions. Please PM with a price.

Nice job on that pistol!

I'm guessing it's about 4" of barrel? Have you shot BP through it and noticed unburned powder expelled?

I've been thinking something like what you've done would be good on an 1858, but many feel that wouldn't leave enough barrel to properly burn powder on a fair charge of 30-35 grns (3F).

thanks, Yes I have fired it with BP. Actually I use the Hogdon 30 grain solid pellet. It does spew fire. I'll have chronograph numbers next week. I built that revolver out of a 7.5" barrel and upper frame. I had to buy everything else from ROAparts, gunpartscorp, gunbroker, midway, ebay and brownells.

Do you use a wad over the pellet? What cap are you using?

No, but I do use a felt over powder, haven't had any problems with the pellets. I use #1075 Vorderladen-Zundhutchen caps. I've got a couple of cans of em. I don't know if you can still get them, I've had enough to do me for a while, I haven't looked for them lately.

MRRAGPICKERS nice belly gun..........

That's a nice shorty ROA you have there MRRAGPICKER, mind telling us more on how you went about with the birds head grip and all the parts, fitting etc. Cool gun. I have a spare fixed sight ROA I'd like to turn into one like yours. :)

Well, I’ve had the “stock” ROA for over 10 years and was always wanting to get the 5 1/2” version to make a cool set. Then the prices went sky high. So I decided to get a 7 ½” barrel and loading lever and shorten it to make a “kit” that I could swap on my “stock” gun. So about a month ago I finally found a barrel, but it was a barrel and empty upper frame. So since I got the frame too I figured I’d just make another gun instead. I decided that maybe one day I’ll happen upon a good deal on a 5 ½” gun, so why not make a hide out gun . I think it would be really cool now with the three different gun set. Anyway, I cut the barrel down to 4” from cylinder face. I had to buy all the other parts. I got the Bird grip frame from midway. It was oversized, so I had to file it down to within a 64th or so and then dremel it the rest of the way. Got the grips off ebay. The trigger is a blue power trigger from brownells. A stainless trigger is next to impossible to find. The timing was off, so I shortened the pawl a hair and it locks up perfect. I took it to a gunsmith to put the front sight on. I was under the impression he could handle it. I got it back 1 week later. He told me he had a hard time getting it to silver solder into the groove he milled in, so he J-B welded it on. I took it home and scraped off the epoxy and clean out the groove. I loaded up a roll of stainless wire into my mig welded and dropped a bead on each side of the blade sight, then ground it down and polished it all up with some stainless polish I got from Eastwood. With cowboy load 45 colts it holds a six shot 2” group at 25 feet. I’m going to get some chrony numbers between the two gun soon.

MRRAGPICKER's ROA Shorty.............

Great work there MRRAGPICKER. A lot of knowhow and patience went into that "ROA Shorty". Great work! Thanks for sharing with us all of that info. Like they say nowadays, and I think all of us 'young shooters' would say here. SWEET! :)
