Cimmaron Model P: What's the lowdown?

Well I currently load my .44 spl with black powder shouldn't be too much of a change to apply it to .45 colt.

Howdy

You find that with Black Powder 45 Colt will give you considerably more punch than 44 Special. You can stuff more powder into the 45 Colt case.

Cimarron is a private label of a western wear shop. On the Main street in Fredericksburg, Texas is a Cowboy boot and western wear shop called "Texas Jacks". Texas Jack's owns and sells these firearms which have better external cosmetics. They however on the inside are no different than any other import. There is a booming business tuning these guns for real shooting. :)

No, they don't. They come right off the same manufacturing line as every other Uberti. They have a little nicer lettering but that's it. They're otherwise indistinguishable from those sold by Dixie Gun Works, Taylor's, EMF or Stoeger.

Cimarron has their high luster bluing done at Ford's Gun Shop in Florida. Not the same as others. Better.

When I had my FFL Quite a few of these revolvers (Uberti and Cimarron) passed through my hands and the Cimarron's always looked nicer, to me. I've been in shop in Fredericksburg a couple of times as well and the firearms on display just stood out or something. I don't have any proof by any means and I know they all come off the same assembly line, but just a casual observation.

I shoot the Cimarron replicas to save wear on my Colts and get the same accuracy at a lower price. First Generation Colts have better quality than third generation. Best quality of all is my USFA. Here is my 7th Cav Cimarron with the shine stripped from the grips. 7thCavCimarron1.jpg

Maybe you're referring to their 1911? Cimarron receives finished guns from Uberti. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand but apparently, Cimarron's marketing is effective. They farm out action jobs, engraving and the US finish is done by Classic Guns but that's about it.

35 Whelen, I will likely be condemned but I agree with you. :) It seems to me the Cimarrons look better than the other imports. I have a Cimarron Sharps that looks and is fitted better than other imported Sharps.

Yes, our baseless claims are no less valid than anyone else's baseless claims. :D

BTW, I like your avatar. Tom Threepersons was a very interesting man/lawman. Three of his personal guns as well as a lot of memorabilia are up for auction here:

The only Uberti I ever had a problem with and had to return was a Cimarron......for fit & finish problems.

I own Uberti guns from Cimarron, EMF, Stoeger, Dixie Gun Works and Taylor's and have handled a bunch more. I can't tell a lick of difference between them, inside or out. Same for a lot of other shooters who own a bunch of these guns. So maybe you guys who think there is a difference can point out what it is.

Can't point out a single thing that makes my Cimarron Bisley .357x7½" any better than the Dixie Gun Works Bisley .44Splx4¾".

Or this Taylor's .32-20, which has nice colors and figured grips.

One of my best fit & finish Uberti's is this 3rd model Dragoon. It came from Dixie Gun Works and was bought by my wife, sight unseen.

Same for this little 1849.

The DGW Dragoon even has better case colors than this Cimarron 1860 Richards Type II.

Nicely finished Uberti Walker from Cabela's.

No discernible difference between this Cimarron 1866 .44Spl.

And this 1873 .38-40 from DGW. Except that this `73 has a little nicer wood. Both are excellent shooters with awful triggers.

35 W, Yep it is starting rain already. :D Thanks so much for the link on Tom's guns. Yes I have been a fan of his for many years. I like the Three Person's holster from El Paso leather. I have made a number of side trips over the years to study Tom's history. Thanks again for the link. :)

Nice collection, CraigC! Firearms of the old west have always been a favorite of mine. I still need a conversion revolver like your Richards Type II. Very nice collection.

Love the Model 1866 Yellowboy in .44 Special! A handsome rifle in one of my favorite calibers.

I thumbed a coworker's Colt 45 two months ago and aside from the slightly better case color finish and more audible clicks when cocking I don't think I'd get a Colt.

Howdy Again

Louder clicks means nothing. It only means the split trigger/bolt spring is stronger.

Here are two photos of the one Uberti/Cimarron Cattleman I still own. Not a bad gun, but there is nothing spectacular about the finish.

For comparison, here is a 2nd Gen Colt. Bear in mind, this gun is about 40 years old, and I have shot thousands of Black Powder rounds through it over the last ten years, so the colors of the Case Hardening have faded a bit. They were a bit more brilliant when I bought it. This one has been rode hard and put away wet a few times, that's why there are a few nicks and scratches on it. The turn line was already there when I bought it.
