    Art Eatman Passed

First time I've logged in here in ages. First thing I did was search my old friend's name and I see I'm a little late for reconnecting with Art one more time. I first met Art when I was a young boy in the 70s, on the Vanham Ranch near Uvalde, TX. He was on a lease with a group from the Texas...

    Spotting Scope Recommendations

Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to stay in the +/-$500 range, but can go up to $1,000 if that is what it takes. I'll just have to wait a little longer if it is much over $500. 250 yards will be the long side in most cases, but am hoping I can cover the occaisional 300 yard shots too.

    Spotting Scope Recommendations

Can anyone provide advice recommendations on a spotting scope. This is primarily for seeing .22 cal (and larger) holes on targets at the range, up to 300 yards. I want good eye relief so that i don't have to remove my glasses to check the target. It might get some hunting use in the field...

    Pending?

Thank you. That's what I needed to know.

    Pending?

When discussing class 3 purchases, I have seen people make reference to a "pending" status. Can someone tell me what that means? I'm assuming it is a status designation within the ATF. Can I make an iquiry directly with them, or does the dealer need to make the inquiry? Does it indicate...

Feedback on 199Trust or other online NFA Gun trust

I'm still undecided but leaning toward DIY. I need to make up my mind soon before my local dealer runs out of stock. Still trying to get my head around the ramifications to my minor daughter if both my wife and myself pass away. Once I am satisfied my bases are covered in that regard, I'll...

Feedback on 199Trust or other online NFA Gun trust

Justin, can you elaborate on the potential legal support? Do they offer anything specific in terms of representing you in the event there are subsequent issues? For example if the Class 3 item is confiscated due to issues with the trust documentation, will they represent you at no cost in...

    "NFA Trust"

Yes, you wouldn't have that "protection" with DIY. It would be nonsensical to protect a payment that wasn't made. That being said, I wouldn't consider it a protection to make an attorney do what you already paid them to do. Now, if attorney error makes one immune to ATF fines, then that is...

    NICS Wait Time

If NICS check receives a "delayed" status, the FFL can transfer the firearm without approval after 3 business days. Seems like a lot of motivation for a decision within 3 days. I'd be surprised to learn that there are many cases that take longer than business days. Or has there been a change...

    Gift vs straw purchase.

In the particular case I wrote about, it might have had something to do with the fact that my father lived about 60 miles from the gun store and I lived about 5 miles from the gun store. Others might have other reasons. As far as the rest, I only mentioned it as risk mitigation. For example...

    Gift vs straw purchase.

My local gun shop handles this by using gift certificates. This way, the "gift recipient" is making the firearm purchase from the FFL and does the required paperwork. Still not the same as handing someone a gift wrapped box with the gun enclosed, but better than going to the store and handing...

    "NFA Trust"

Good point, Mike. Preventing my heirs (and spouse while I'm still living) from being accidental criminals is 50% of the reason I'm going with a trust in the first place. The other 50% being that I'm hearing the local Sheriff won't sign, which is actually a little surprising considering my home...

    "NFA Trust"

Thanks for the responses everyone. And thanks for the references to Texas lawyers. If I decide to hire someone, I'll check into them. Not too worried about going to prison, but it might save me some hastle and/or ATF delays on the application.

    "NFA Trust"

I'm getting ready to make my first "NFA type" purchase (a suppressor) and have a question I'm hoping someone can help with. I've been reading through some of the forum posts and I see people refer to an "NFA Trust". I live in an area where the Sheriff will not sign and I also want my wife to...

Varmint/Predator Hunting - light or night vision scope

Thanks for the response Adelbridge. So, I'm inferring from your message that if I can more or less dedicate the rifle to night shooting, the night vision scope might be the way to go. Otherwise, plan on using conventional scope with light and be cautious in the use of the light. Does that...

Varmint/Predator Hunting - light or night vision scope

I'm building a new rifle. I've never used night vision and am wondering if that might be the way to go with my new build. What do you all prefer for hunting at night? A night vision scope or "conventional" with a light? Why? TIA, Mike

    Quality Reloading Hulls

Thanks all. As it turns out, the book I started reading happens to be Lyman 5th ed. It was a hand-me-down from my father and I hadn't noticed it was the one referenced in this thread until I picked it up again. I started looking at the loads referenced in the book and see how things are...

    Quality Reloading Hulls

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like there is strong consensus on Gold Medal, AA and STS. And the tip on the Lyman manual and stadardization sounds like a good one. I have a good supply of live ammo in Black Cloud, Heavy Shot and Kent (3" and 3.5"). Anyone have any experience with those...

    Quality Reloading Hulls

Need to start saving my spent factoring loads as I prepare to begin reloading. Any suggestions for factory ammo that has quality reloading potential for spent hulls? I've been told that most won't crimp well for reloading. I'm interesting in 2 3/4, 3 and 3.5". Thanks in advance, Mike

    12 gauge velocity

Thanks for the replies. Doesn't sound like the velocity is very significant in this case. I appreciate the importance of pattern, but often do not have the opportunity to pattern the available ammo before a hunt. Just wondering when all other things being equal, how much of a difference the...
