I like a Winchester model 70 classic in 270 Winchester. I have shot deer with many different calibers and the 270 drops them in their tracks. It is the only caliber I have not had to hunt a dead deer with. So to me it is the perfect caliber.
I don't have a definite answer but back in the early 70's the main powders I saw was IMR and surplus military powders. IMR was a couple of bucks a can and military surplus was $0.25 a pound.
