Does anyone have any good data for .357 pistol bullets of the 158-grain persuasion in the .35 Whelen? I'd favor accuracy over outright velocity, and I know it's a bit contradictory, but I'd like to avoid any stuffings like Dacron.

i am using this bullet in my herrett, which is basically a necked up and trimed 30/30 case. i am getting 4 inch groups from a ten inch barrel. if i was a better shot i believe the groups would shrink some. i would think you could find a bulky powder which would suffienciently fill the 06 case. let me know how your research progresses.
I've had good results with a 158 grain .358 diameter round nose flat point from Meister in a .35 Remington. The powder charge is 10 grains of Unique, which makes for a very mild and accurate load in my Marlin 336.
Lyman doesn't list the .35 Whelen in the cast bullet manual that I have, but they list a .358 Winchester load using a 150 grain cast bullet with 11.5 grains starting to 15 grains max of Unique. Somewhere in there might be a good place to start. Unique is pretty easy to ignite, and pretty consistent.

9.2 grains of Trail Boss will fill the case half full. 14.8 grains will fill it 80% full, which is about as far as you want to go. Both instances assumes the bullet is seated one caliber deep. Do not compress Trail Boss, even a little. Accuracy will go to pot. I'd expect velocity to be around 1,650 fps for the starting load and 1,850 fps for the max.
Trail Boss is becoming very popular for reduced loads because of it’s ability to fill cases, negating the need for fillers or special shooting practices - like raising the muzzle between shots in order to “pile” the powder atop the primer.
The NRA publication Handloading has reduced loads for the .30-06. From a 24” barrel a 155 gr cast bullet with 14 grains of SR4759 will give 1245 fps. 20 grains will give 1715 fps. The Whelen and the .30-06 are so similar I would consider the starting load safe, and work up to the max. You may find the max load needs to be reduced a few grains due to the Whelen’s larger expansion ratio.
