I see 20-rd detatchable mags for the k98 style mausers (8mm) but I hear they are not very reliable.
I see 3 (three) rd detatchables from Gibbs but I hear they are more hassle than they're worth, and flimsy as well.

So I look very carefully...

Looks to me like a Czech zb-26/30 mag will fit unaltered into a k98!

Anyone ever tried it?

Unaltered is important.

Like anything else in life if you want to play you have to pay. I have seen gunsmiths like Moe Definna who I believe is still alive and somewhere in Connecticut, modify bolt guns like the Remington 700 for use with 20 round M14 magazines. This could also be done with the Mauser 98 , I am sure.

The question is of course is why do this?

If your 98 has no scope on it you can use 5 round stripper clips and reload it in less than 1 second. I used to do this myself when I shot national match with a bolt gun. We got 60 seconds to fire 10 aimed shots at 200 yards from the sitting position.

I might add that when you fire a gun rapidly, especially unaimed fire that you can ruin the barrel in short order because of overheating it. Even with rapid aimed fire that is a lot slower you should not fire over 10 rounds in 60 seconds.

These magazines were designed for use during trench warfare. I have also seen examples for the Lee-Enfield.

As far as I know, these magazines are not meant to be detachable in the manner of an AR15, M14, or similar rifle. They are detachable for cleaning, but are supposed to be reloaded by stripper clips.
