22 semiauto to shoot CCI Quiet

I know that there is a lot that can go into this question so a simple answer is what I am looking for.

Would a reduced power recoil spring be enough to make a semiauto cycle CCI Quiet ammo? I know that bullet shape can have an effect and I'm not asking that. I really just want something a little quieter for pests with having to use a suppressor.

I understand that this would limit range as well. Would I just be better served using a bolt action rifle with Quiets instead of a pistol?

It depends on the platform you are shooting it out of. A lot of .22 pistols have two springs to contend with when recoiling. The first is the obvious recoil spring, the second is the mainspring or hammer spring. This is often the most problematic one to deal with. It has to be strong for reliable detonation so if you lighten it up, you may get light strikes. The S&W M&P22 seems like a good one to start with, having the lightest pull effort of almost every .22 I have tried. If you don't have any success with semi autos, you can always try a revolver or Thompson Contender.

I have a reduced power spring in my 10/22 custom and all I shoot are standard velocity match grade ammo and it will not reliably shoot the quiet ammo. BUT my wifes 10/22 custom is made from a 30 years old ruger with a stock recoil spring and it will run reliably with the cci quiets. Several other in know have tried them to and no luck with any other semi-autos. It is quieter in a longer barreled bolt rifle any how.

Oh yea they will not cycle in our old colt huntsman or ruger semi-autos. Not quiet in them anyhow. Use a rifle a bolt action and long barreled

Also something you have to contend with is the actual mass that has to be moved. Lighten the recoil spring all you want, but it will be much harder to remove mass from the bolt.

Anticipating the arrival of my new suppressor (which I'm still anticipating), I bought a box of CCI Quiet ammo. 722 fps?? Won't cycle my 22/45 or 10-22.

I manually cycle them in my Ruger MKII. Just pull the bolt back after every shot, it is not as hard as it may first sound.

That's the way i've been doing it, since i started shooting low powered ammo many years ago. It works just fine...

Try to find some Aquila sniper subsonic with the 60gr bullet, it runs well in my 10/22 and 22/45.



Out around 50y they will begin to tumble- YRMV

good bit louder than cci 22lr quiets though..

If your shooting quiets out of a pistol with a suppressor, they are hand clapping quiet, have to manually cycle them though like mentioned before..

I'd go with a bolt or lever action rifle and not stress over them not cycling..

The quiets won't cycle my 10/22, or my 22/45 lite, but they will cycle my SR22 if I'm using rem dry lube and a can. That said, unsuppressed .22s are a lot louder in pistols than they are in rifles, even the quiets aren't going to be terribly quiet out of a short barrel.

I'd second the motion to pick up a long barreled bolt gun (or lever gun) for quiet vermin control.

from personal experience, my buckmark wouldnt cycle cci quiets either.

Hey Urban, I just wish the 60 grain SSS would not key hole from my Ruger MKII otherwise great. Too bad they don't make a 50 grainer, wonder if that would be more stable.

indeed about 1 in 10 tumbles way off target at 100yds in my 10/22. But my AR has a 1:8 twist and it is scary accurate with those out of my spikes conversion. I wish someone made an upper for a ruger MK series with a 1:8 twist.

Be careful with these, they don't stabilize well in the typical 1 in 16" .22lr barrel and you could end up with baffle strikes if shooting suppressed.

I find Wolf Match every bit as quiet suppressed and a whole lot cleaner and accurate.

They cycle good with a Volquartsen Short bolt in a 10/22. It's aluminum so the mass has been cut by 2/3rds. I don't know about longevity but I believe they have less pressure than Short VH. I don't do it often or recommend it, so I'll leave it to someone who is willing to sacrifice their rifle to find out.

I once had some reduced power ammo. I just can't remember the brand. I will try to remember if someone here might not know what it is first. But what I do remember was that it's velocity was advertised at 850 fps for the 40 grain HP bullets. They cycled my S&W 422 with every shot. That despite 1000fps shothells not being able to cycly the pistol.

I live in a small city and do not want to disturb anyone.

So I compared the CCI quiets to the CCI CB caps and the CB's won hands down.

I use them in a T/C break open single shot and they are VERY quiet.

The longer barrel and the bolt or break open action work best to suppress sound.

for what it's worth, the CCI quiet in .22 short is easy on the ears out of my single six, but every other "quiet' .22 i've shot makes far too much noise to shoot without ear protection.
